Soccer Mom

My girlfriend Beth, she is TG as well, and I are taking a vacation next week. We decided to go as a couple of soccer Moms on a vacation before the kids go back to school. I know for traveling and casual that means shorts, yoga pants, and leggings paired with t shirts. My dilemma is we are planning on a couple of dinners in nice restaurants. What would a soccer mom we are for something like that? I have a lot of dresses both knee length and maxis are those too over the top for a vacation in a resort town? Should I also take my LBD? What about shoes, heels? I really want to look the role. For the record I am 5' 7" and 165 lbs which translates into generally a size 14 for me. I think I pass pretty well but who ever knows.

Any suggestions girls?

Personally I think you can't go wrong with the old LBD paired with some nice but not OTT jewellery I love the ubiquitous string of pearls. I have a three strand necklace and each strand is a different length so they fall one above each other. As for shoes heels are fine and I think more acceptable with a LBD than flats.

However after reading your post again what's wrong with a nice knee length dress, just because you're soccer mums doesn't mean you don't want to dress up and look good for dinner.

That's my take on things from memory as it's been so long since I got to pop on a nice dress and go out anywhere. By the way I hope you both have a truly wonderful time on your holiday and take lots of photos.

Love
Michelle D.

In a resort town during vacation season a sun dress with saddles will do just fine for even the best of restaurants. Just don't forget you manni peddi and accessories. The LBD would be over the top for a resort town in season unless it was a formal occasion.

Sounds like fun... have a great time!

I live near two resorts towns and one in particular has many very fine dining establishments. For those an LBD would be fine. Personally I would go with a colorful necklace rather than pearls. Strappy heeléd sandals would be an ideal shoe choice , especially for a soccer mom. Alexia is right about the mani-pedi, no self respecting soccer mom would wear sandals without one. Leave the hose at home, soccer Moms don't wear pantyhose (stockings, etc.) anymore in the summer. If your legs are pasty white use a spray tan. Sally Hansen has one that works well and is available in several shades.

Enjoy your vacation from the kids Melissa  and let us know how it goes.

The soccer mom's I know can dress to the nines if the situation warrants - like a league fund raiser. So if you go out to a really nice place the lbd would be fine.

But the safest bet, is the afore mentioned sundress and sandals.

Have a blast. And I expect a full trip report when you return :). Are live updates too much to ask???

Kelly.

Thanks for the tips all. I am planning on trying to do a couple of updates providing I can get on via my phone. :)

Dear Melissa,

What are 'soccer moms' without the kids and a soccer ball? Two less than casually dressed women might be viewed as a lesbian couple now days. :P
Dress with separates, not dresses. Jeans, Capri's, or a skirt. A nice blouse or pretty T-shirt would work well in most casual restaurants.
Resort towns are used to under dressed ladies, we can't pack everything to look pretty. A few skirts and low heels or flats should be fine. Knowing what you consider a 'resort town' would be helpful, Branson or Vegas?
Enjoy your trip!

It all depends on your style Eileen. There are two somewhat resort towns not far from where I am. In one you are absolutely correct in your assessment of how women dress. In the other it is a bit more upscale. You can go into a "nice" restaurant and yes you see the casually attired but you also see mostly dressed up women. The men are a whole other subject :( Granted a few go over the top but you see a lot of dresses of all lengths and well accessories. Even in the downtown shopping district you see sundresses sometimes and the past year a lot of maxi skirts and dresses. Might change this week though as it is supposed to be pushing 90 with humidity to match!

It's funny I did the "soccer mom" look before it had a moniker. Back in the late 80's & 90's I would do the business woman look, skirted suits, during the week and the casual look, denim skirts, jeans, stirrup pants, on the weekend. I think the look is adorable and sometimes wish I was a few years younger so I could pull it off. Nowadays I guess I would be a soccer grandma! Here in the Detroit area how the soccer Moms dress is a function of where in the region they live. I live in one of the upscale suburbs and here they drive import SUV's and dress to the nines. It's strange in you will probably find them more dressed up for lunch with the girls than dinner with hubby. Someone here in another post the women dress for themselves and I agree 100% with that but they also keep an eye to how other women see them.

Regarding the soccer mom look, here is someone who has it down to a fine art. She emphasizes dressing to fit in rather than stand out. I look at her and marvel.

She has a great page and blog. . Highly recommended!
