I was at the mall today and cut through Penney's and these were there front and center. I had to do a double take before I realized my eyes hadn't deceived me, stirrup pants!

For an instant I had a flashback to the 80's then wondered what's the next rage of yore to claw its way back? Big hair? Shoulder pads?

I used to wear black lycra stirrup pants (the shimmery black ones) to work many years ago. Paired with a dressy blazer that went to the top of my thighs (or a long cowl neck sweater tunic in winter) and a set of high heels ... that was an awesome look. I still have some of those stirrup pants, too.

If I wore them with my cowboy boots, even the boss stayed out of my way ... she knew I was in full 'manure-kicking' mode that day. The guys loved it, because I did what they were afraid to do: stand up to the boss.

Don't get me wrong I loved stirrup pants too back then and wore them. I remember I had a pair of burgundy velvet stirrups with a matching long blazer (covered my backside) I wore to a Christmas party with a gold lame top and gold pumps. I got many compliments on it and somewhere around here there is a picture of me sitting in Santa's lap wearing it.

My reasoning for bring this up is like the mini skirt, leggings, etc. it seems like most of the old fashions have a way of resurrecting themselves from the ashes. I guess we should have hung on to all those clothes.

So now I pose the obvious question::

Of the fashions and trends of the past which would you like to see as the latest rage and which one to do hope remains dead and buried?

Personally I always liked the gaucho pants of the 70s. They were comfy and afforded a bit more warmth and lacked the drawbacks of a skirt. Also they were the perfect compromise between dressy and casual.

As for those I pray stay dead and buried there are several but most of all it would have to be the shoulder pads of the 80's. Yes I wore them as did everyone else however looking back there were a few that made me look more like a linebacker than a stylishly attired businesswoman.

So many fashions of the past I missed out on it is tough to narrow it down to just one. If I have to pick just one it would be the colorful hair bows women used back in the 80's and 90's. Let us be honest they were a much better accessory than the scrunchies of today.

Again there are several fashions of yesterday I would love see banished to a museum but the one you still see today though not that often leads the list by a long way. the dreaded suntan shade hose! I mean who do you know whose legs have that awful orange tint?

Ahem. I always wear 'suntan' shade hose, and I have yet to find any that are of an orange tint; not saying they don't exist, just that I have yet to see them.

I only buy the L'Eggs brand of Suntan and found it's a 'true suntan' color for my natural half-Italian skin tone. In the winter, I switch to Coffee, just a bit darker but no where near dark brown or black, both of which I despise (as well as most 'colored' hose).

If I had to pick on a style of the past I would love to see come back I would have to say Gunnie Sax style dresses. I have seen pictures of them, including a few of my own mother and aunt, and they are lovely, so soft and feminine.

As for something that should stay dead and buried I would have to say anything polyester.

There are so many fashions through history, I would love to the large Georgian and mid-Victorian gowns, Empire Dresses of 1830s to the long skirts of the Edwardians. Too many to choose....

Recalling Laura Petrie on the Dick van Dyke Show of the 60's. Her legs were lovely in stirrup pants.
Generally speaking, gowns that look lovely are a b*tch to wear.

Ain't that the truth! I think about all those petticoats and pantaloons from those Victorian gowns and wonder if one could get into the stall in most ladies rooms today.

Hmmmmm, what do I want to see make a comeback? Guess I can't say stirrup pants as obviously they are.

I would have to say the softer frilly styles of the early and mid 80's. Was really getting my heels under me then and have a lot of fond memories of those days and fashions.

As for what should stay buried? The old fashioned foundation garments of the 50s and early 60s! I think most of us have tried them and I know some girls still love them but no thanks for this girl. Not that I can't use some help but today's shapewear is so much more comfortable.

Funny thread, and I agree with what’s been listed thus far as to what fashions need to stay buried. But, I’m with Karen Ski on this one, let’s bring back some of those fun 80s styles.

What would I like to be buried forever; simple, burry the current trend of jeans, tennis shoes, and t-shirts, which the vast majority of women (men included) wear in public. My spouse and I spend a lot time at amusement parks, casual restaurants, etc., etc., and we’re always stunned at the lack of individuality, imagination, and effort most people put into their presentation. One certainly doesn’t have to be a fashion designer to put together a comfortable, practical, yet attractive outfit.

Note: Most who do cross the gender barrier in some form or another tend to put effort into their ensembles, which is admirable

If I could choose anything to come back in fashion? PETTICOATS!!!!

I remember a few girls back in the day who wore stirrup pants - I'd always thought they were a great!

I miss a lot of those 80's fashions... they were just so bright, colourful, different and fun.

I used to love the women's rock-on look: the tight jeans or short skirts, the high heel buckle boots, crop tops, denim and tassled leather, the pound and a half of makeup with lots of black eyeliner and bright, glossy lipstick and of course... the big, teased hair! Not saying that the look should come back - it should stay right where it was left in 1988, just saying that having missed out on it back then, it might be fun to do for next Hallowe'en!! One trend that I have seen make a comeback in recent times are jelly shoes. My sister used to wear them and I just can't help but wonder how can anyone find jelly shoes comfortable??? Oh, right... it's not about comfort - it's about fashion!!

Funny how most of the old fashions seem to come back around over time. Personally most of what I have seen here as staying buried I have to agree. One I have seen try to peek out a couple of times that needs to stay dead and buried is the colorful spandex jeans of the disco era. A good fitting pair of jean can be comfortable and a girl's best friend. Those spandex creations of yesterday offered the worst of the worst.

As for making a comeback? Many have mentioned them and I will add my vote to theirs. The softer feminine fashions of the 1980's. Be it the Gunnies' Sax dresses, the soft ruffled dresses and blouses, even slacks and jeans back then were far from a unisex look.
