I've been looking around for a decent makeup 'sampler' kit with a variety of colors and shades to see what works best for me.

I ran across two such kits:

Are either of these even worth the (relatively) few dollars they cost?

My wife was given (and I borrowed) a similiar set several years ago.
I remember the nail color being very thin and 'watery'.
The lipstick was also were dry.

Can anyone recommend a source for a decent starter set?

These will still be used just around the house as I have no plans on going out dressed anytime soon, so I don't want to spend a bundle on the individual items, yet.

The kits are probably ok but they are missing several key ingredients. Concealer, foundation and powder

Without proper base, unless you look like a gg and have no beard, then you'll not get a real good feel for how the colors work.

Additionally, as you mentioned, they'll be sitting around the house not getting much use, and theus dry out or go bad anyway, even if they start out in good shape.

If your going to practise a LOT then the kits may be a good deal for the price.

Note, you can play with colors for free on sites such as cover girl.

I think one of the most critical things with these kind of kits is how close to the expiration date it is.

My wife gave me a kit made by by Markwin's from a Penneys store, and the quantities of each individual color was rather small.

The expiration date was only a few months away, but I try to use most of the contents of one container before opening the next of the same kind, and it doesn't seem too bad.

I know I'm feeling my way slowly along - my wife doesn't wear makeup and can't provide a lot of help.

I have seen the Markwin name on a lot of kits, so I would suggest to check the expiration date, then choose the set that has the most things you want to try.

I didn't even realize make-up expired or 'went bad'. Does it ever become
'unsafe' to use or just dry and unusable?

Also, I posted this in another thread, but, I'll re-post/re-ask here regarding foundations...

Does Dermablend offer a 'sample kit' containing several different shades as Coloration and possible other do?

Dermablend appears to be a bit less expensive, but, does it require a 'setting powder'? If so, that may even things out a bit.

Also, just what is the 'setting powder' for?

Hi.....there is an expiration time for makeup...and some does become unsafe (and afterall..you are putting it on your face). This site...which I mentioned in another thread, has a chart showing this. http://www.jenellerose.com/make_up.htm
A big page..so go edit.......find ....then type in expiration.
Theres a lot of good information there about setting powder also

I love makeup! I would suggest that instead of getting makeup kits that have lots of colors that you will never use, that you go to a Merle Norman or a Mary Kay lady. They will help you with colors and the result will be, in my experence, well work the extra money in results. Call around and I am sure you will find a friendly store. Good Luck!
