Jewelry choices depend on any number of things. In general, clunky jewelry goes with rougher fabrics, daintier stuff goes with daintier fabrics. Jewelry is suppossed to *accent* the look, not overwhelm it.
But jewelry choices also depend on the size of the person wearing it. Slender people can wear daintier things. Start watching women of a size approaching yours and see what type of jewelry they wear. That'll give you a good idea.

where to buy jewelry Quest
I am very tall and have large hands. I should be wearing some sort of costume jewelry on my fingers. I am wondering where you find the rings and bracelets that will fit extra large.

Thank you for the tip. I forgot that even if you are not a large size in clothes your hands are still big. Janet

All I can add is and I think this was attributed to Gloria Vanderbilt, "once you are dressed and have all your accessories/jewelery on -- take at least one piece off!"
I think about that everytime I get dressed, doesn't work for me
I love my rings but according to Deane Doyle, you want to deactcentuate, is that a word? you want to NOT accentuate those parts that might make you stand out, ie, we tend to have bigger hands, so bright nail polish and rings tend to draw attention to them. Sorry, can't help myself, I guess. I like the longer nails as they tend to make your fingers appear longer then I wear my rings, but I guess its personal taste!
Don't wear an ankle bracelet with a formal gown either! That's just plain tacky!!!!
I return this thread to the GG's!
