Straight, long hair? What to do?

Post by MsJoann »

I wear my natural hair long (for the first time in my life), so there is no need to wear wigs. The problem is.... my hair is thin and bone-straight. I would like to find a good way to have more volume on the top of my head. Seems that I can pouf-it-up, but it is only temporary and soon lies flat.
Is there something that I can add such as mousse? Or is it time for a perm? I am planning on having it layerd but I'm afraid that I'll lose much of the bulk that I've grown.
Any sdvise?

Layering will loose you some bulk but usually add more body because the legenth of your hair can add weight and weigh down your hair. If you want more body check out a set of hot rollers before you think about a perm. They are quick and easy and a bad perm is hard to avoid. For more volume also you can add some volumizing product to damp hair and blow dry upside down while combing from the base of the neck forward. Add some hair spray at your roots and flip your hair back over. Now style as desired, this may help. Also you can try adding product at the roots then pull up with your fingers and dry with the dryer at the root base till product is dry, smooth and style after you get the lift you desire. Also look up the bump it, it's a product sold on tv designed to help with volume too. This is a common problem among women but there are many products out there to add volume so give a few a try. Hope this helps. There are many many videos on youtube on how to style hair and even make up tutorials for men :) Have fun!

Your first sentence was correct. Yes, the weight is pulling everything down straight. My hair is going south! That is what my GF says.
I can remember when I had styled short hair. It took me 2 mins to dry and it was in shape instantly.
Currently I use volumizing shampoo and dry upside-down ....looks good for 5 mins..then flat again.
Making an appt to get it razored out, then will try what you suggested.
Thanks!

Joann,

You might also try teasing the underlayers of your hair and then combing the top layers smooth. With fine hair, like I assume yours is, volumizing shampoo/conditioner and mousse will help, but only a small amount. I would suggest that you use those products and blow-dry upside down as you currently do, but you have to add a solid mass for your hair to lay on. The bump-it is an option, but if you are layering, it may end up being visible. I would try the teasing, just hold a section of your hair up, comb it toward your scalp and repeat with all the areas you want more volume for. It may take some practice, but it can be well worth the effort! :)
