Next Saturday, November 20th, marks the 12th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, an international event honoring trans people who have lost their lives to violence. Local organizations will commemorate Trans Awareness Week in the days leading up to the vigil. A guide to next week's events in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (NOTE: This post will be updated as more event information becomes available; submit tips in the comments).


WEDNESDAY, NOV. 17:

WASHINGTON - The National Center for Transgender Equality holds its 7th anniversary celebration. The fundraiser will honor District transgender advocacy group the DC Trans Coalition. From NCTE: "The DC Trans Coalition has done groundbreaking work here that has not only made DC safer and more equitable, but has led to changes around the country. Six states have used a model driver’s license policy pioneered here in the nation’s capital and championed by DCTC. Their work on prison policies and public accommodation access (especially with regards to public restrooms) has made an incredible difference for transgender people." National Press Club, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor, 7 p.m. $50.


THURSDAY, NOV. 18:

WASHINGTON - This Transgender Day of Remembrance event plans to remember "community members who have been victims of violence" and "honor and remember the courage and perseverance of those who experienced this grave injustice." Presidential appointee Amanda Simpson will speak; LGBT dance troupe Oasis will perform; the Covenant Baptist Church's choir will sing. Metropolitan Community Church, 474 Ridge Street NW, 6:30 p.m.


SATURDAY, NOV. 20:

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The University of Virginia LGBT Resource Center will hold "a photo-exhibition, performance art, and round table discussion with guest speakers in observance of Transgender Day of Remembrance." University of Virginia’s Newcomb Hall Main Lounge, 3rd floor, Main Lounge and Art Gallery, 7 p.m.

FAIRFAX - At the Northern Virginia Transgender Day of Remembrance "Attendees are invited to bring with them a canned good and/or an article of clothing" to benefit Transgender Health Empowerment. Metropolitan Community Church of Northern Virginia, 10383 Democracy Ln., 7 p.m.

RICHMOND - Richmond's Trangender Day of Remembrance event will feature a morning magnolia tree dedication and reception, followed by an evening vigil which will "include the reading of the names of those killed as a result of anti-transgender violence since November 20, 2009." Dedication at Gay Community Center of Richmond, 1407 Sherwood Ave., 10:30 a.m.; vigil at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 520 N. Boulevard, 7 p.m.
