A sly way to crossdress in Japan
The Wall Street Journal today (July 30, 2008) noted that a popular cartoon series has become a shrine for fans. The devotees are4 described as young men, who dress like the female characters, in miniskirts.
The article follows in brief (no pun):
For many years Washinomiya Shrine has been a quiet place of worship, attracting just a trickle of sightseers to this sleepy town outside Tokyo. Thenl ast summer priests started noticing a new kind of visitor. Young men, some clad in mini-skirts, stockings and pastel-colored wigs, were lining up for photographs at the shrine's vermillion gate. Over the big New Year's holiday in January, nearly 300,000 such visitors - almost ten times the town's population - showed up, scores of them clad in outfits resembling schoolgirl uniforms. Discerning fans had figured out that Washinomiya Shrine is regularly featured in "Lucky Star", a wildly popular animated comicthat aired as a televisionseries last year. Like the fans of other comics, Lucky Star's most ardent followers - often men in their 20s and 30s - demonstrate their commitment to the show by engaging in "costume play" or "cosplay" the popular pastime of dressing up as various characters.
Now let's see...what television show should we demonstrate our devotion to? Sex and the City? America's Top Model? What do you think?

This can't miss ladies!
Hi girls
I sent a demo tape to the cooking channel pitching my new idea for a cooking show. " In the kitchen with Auntie Jeannie." When they call and OK a pilot I'll take care of you ladies. Every episode I'll feature one of you gals with your favorite recipes.
Carol Ann's killer sauteed fresh baby rabbit in Pabst Blue Ribbon, MS Joann's world famous penne pasta with fresh garlic, basil and Johnnie Walker Black. Of course how could I forget Virginia, with her fabulous microwaved hot dogs and Velveeta.
Don't worry GGs,you will not be left out. You could all come on and make your favorite dinner. Reservations. Hugs.

Well, Cosplay seems to be popular here also now...no wonder. A local university, FIU, is hosting an Anime convention this weekend, last year had 2300 attendees. It seems the "maid cafe" is a huge part of this all, as evidenced by earlier posts..so I reprint part of the article here
Yasumicon, in the interest of keeping our con attendants happy is proud
to bring back a great event that was premiered last year. However we
need staff for it. Sounds interesting? Great!
This year a lot of work will be put into place to ensure our
Maids/Butlers/Hosts are top notch. We're looking for able bodied
volunteers for this event. Here's a description of our positions in
greater detail:
Maids/Butler: Maids will be dressed in matched uniforms for this year's
Yasumicon. A typical requirement of the maids in the maid cafe is to
enjoy yourself there. Being happy and full of moe charm helps us
improve the experience for this year's Yasumicon. Butlers will be
dressed in matched uniforms as well. Their job is the same as their
female counterpart. Though butlers are usually more stoic, kindness is
key.
Those who haven't experience in restaurants are fine as we'll have
training sessions for those involved.
Hosts/Hostess: Hosts take care of the cafe area during their shift.
This involves seating guests as well as ensuring the quality of
enjoyment for our patrons. There will also be a couple of events that
will provide our con attendants with complimentary tea. We'll work with
the hosts to arrange these times that you'll be assisting in those
panels.
Yasumicon fully endorses crossplayers as well. We don't discriminate so
if you're a guy and you wanna be a maid, it's absolutely fine, so long
as you go get fitted.
The maid cafe will run for about 6 hours. We'd like to have a rotation
of men and women so that our maid staff can enjoy the rest of the con.
Maid/Butler/Host/ess will all count as Y Volunteers, which includes a
complimentary T Shirt for 2008 as well as a free 3 meal lunch plan for
the duration of the convention.
To apply, please send an email to yplanning@gmail.com with the subject
line "Maid Cafe Application" without quotation marks. This will get it
to the appropriate section. Thanks!????

I've always wanted to try crossplay, but I couldn't pull off a lot of the characters I like without some serious figure-training. My favorite female characters are Motoko Kusanagi from the "Ghost in the Shell" series and Faye Valentine from "Cowboy Bebop". I'd love to do Faye sometime, but I am determined that I'll not attempt it until I can look 1000 times better than the Man-Faye.

My vote would be for Bosum Buddies. Tom Hanks really looked cute in a dress.
Another sly way to crossdress in Japan would be to become a Kabuki actor and train to be an onnagata, actor specialzing in playing female roles.

Just starting to explore my feminine nature- am very shy meek and demure. Addicted to looking and acting ladylike. Still have so many questions about exactly who I am- have so many mixed emotions about my gender issues.

Japanese school girl uniforms
Hello all: Cute video-- I wonder why CDing is so popular (and publicly accepted?) in Japan?
(I wonder if a restaurant/service like that would be successful in the U.S.?)
Myself-- I'd like to get one or two of those adorable Japanese school girl uniforms... (they are similar to cheerleader/"preppie" outfits).
Anybody know a good source for Japanese school girl uniforms?
Peace-- Kendra Lynn ("hippie cheerleader").
