Fern Gully

Post by Rikki »

And to continue this thrahing of Cameron, go rent the animated children's movie "Fern Gully- The Last Rainforest" and you will see large machines pillaging the environment of a gentle little people. Made somewhere back in the 90's.

Just check out this trailer and you'll see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsIzcyYcuR4

I do want to compliment Jim on an amazing technological job, great direction, and beautiful use of this new artform.

So, basically, we're accusing him of simplistic allegory, like Star Wars, or the Bible.....

Michelle,

That was very funny.

A friend of mine said that Avatar was basically Dances with Wolves set on another planet.

Although, as this website points out, James Cameron did not (exactly) ripoff Dances with Wolves:

Hi sisters,

Well as for me and my wife, we just saw it a second time, and we're still dazzled. The cynicism expressed above just doesn't seem to be in the same realm as the film.

Sure the plot recalls others. Although I utterly fail to see any resemblance to Dances with Wolves except in theme ... but then, why bother to look for it? Virtually every theme you can name has been done in hundreds of movies. It's the originality of the viewpoint and the development of the plot, especially the visual aspect—since movies are primarily made to be *seen!* above all else.

This is an original vision and a visually amazing movie. Plus it seems to be having a broad cultural impact, which few movies can do.

Please don't be offended; but I must say I'm astonished that my sisters can't enjoy Avatar for what it is, and give the film credit for what it is, instead of ragging it for what it isn't.

If that's naive of me, well, I am very grateful to be naive. I flat out loved it—and I can say that of only a relatively few movies of all the numerous ones I've watched.

Love, Robyn Katie
