Nails and vitamin C

Post by Steffie »

Hi girls,

I remember a few years ago a crossdresser I knew mentioned that someone told her that vitamin C would help strengthen her nails. At the time I never really gave it too much thought. My nails were always short and would break or bend easily and I just assumed that it would always be this way; if I wanted long nails I would have to get acrylic nails.

I was never really one to take vitamins. However last year after I was sick (due to thyroid problems) I had to get radioactive iodine for my thyroid. About this time I decided to start taking vitamins, especially vitamin C. It helped give me energy (and now I feel great) but the last few months I have also noticed that my nails are no longer brittle and don't bend anymore. I have started to let them grow and so far, knock on wood, they are intact. This is the longest they have ever been and they are really starting to look more femme. :)

The vitamin C must then be responsible and I guess that crossdresser was right. I wish I had started taking vitamin C a couple of years earlier. I think I will go to a nail salon this weekend and get them manicured now that they have grown. :)

I just wanted to share this information with you all. Thanks.

Steffie

Hmmm. I don't know. I have been taking vitamin C supplements for years, and my nails are brittle and some even develop splits. Maybe it was the radiation? No, seriously, I am glad you have some positive results for your nails. It might be that your out of balance thryoid secretions were affecting your nails?

Actually the way that peeps react to meds and chemicals introduced into their bodies varies so much from person to person. I have been on HRT for 6 years, and my nails have been weaker and so on since then. Before my nails were strong and I used them as detail excavators when exposing fagile objects. Now, the nails on my left hand will grow faste and be stronger than those on my right, but I am right handed and do more things with them that can mess them up. I wore acrylics for about a year, and the process of removing the right thumbnail ripped that nail into the quick, and I have not worn them since (over a year ago) and the thumbnail is weak and fractures easily. Dunno if that is the effects of my bod or if it is the result of the damage. I do use clear polish/strengthener (Sally Hanson Miracle Cure hardener) but still the nails on the right hand get brittle and break if you look at them wrong. So, I try not to look at them! :)

Hmmm, I think I will ask my endocrinologist to check my thyroid my next blood test to see if all is well with it.

I imagine that could alsobe a factor, although my friend a long time ago to my knowledge had no thyroid issues. I'm just grateful that they have finally grown. It'll be interesting to see how long I can grow them?

Here is a picture today of my nails after my manicure.

I was in the drug store awhile back wanting some of the red iodine. The SA told me they could no longer get it but had some clear iodine. She siad GGs were using it on thier nails to strenghten them.

Well if it were also my thyroid then maybe something good came out of it. Considering the brief torture I endured, I guess it owed me something (more lady like nails). LOL

After going to the salon for a basic manicure I noticed my nails grow out healthier compared to when I trimmed them. I think a lot of it has to do with the way they are cut (I used to trim mine down to the pink part and they used to grow back brittle). Now that I visit the salon they grow back quite nicely. I think multi-vitamins + good diet/exercise is the key to healthy nails as well.

My mother used to tell me that the nails and hair were an indication of a persons health.

She might have known something as she worked with hair and nails for 50 plus years.

(I guess I can admit my parents knew something as I am a little over 21.)
