Jury Duty

Post by RikkiOfLA »

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week I had jury duty. It was a short case--a misdemeanor with not much testimony, and a judge who has a reputation for getting cases done quickly.

I was, as usual, en femme, but using my male name. And even though I've done lots of things this way, I was still nervous going in.

But everything went fine.

Best of all, the other women on the jury treated me as one of them. We went out to lunch together, and did a little shopping after lunch.

The issue of my transgenderedness never came up. I was just one of the women. And I loved it!

Hi Rikki,

it really looks like you live in a world without clouds - only sunshine.
And it is always a pleasure to read about your experiences.
You really have y bright future and you deserve it.

I can understand the nervousness, Rikki. Being in public enfemme is one thing, but to appear in a court of law before a judge that way takes nerve. Congratulations for being so brave, and for not receiving a hard time from anyone associated with the case.

I'm impressed by two things;

Your strength in person for going out into the world in a manner you feel comfortable in

and

completing your jury-duty, which is a service to your community!

I'm glad you were not taken off the jury if anyone was aware of your gender issue.
I think a jury with someone like you is a plus!

Congrats on doing a civic duty that so many try to avoid.

And yeah, a courtroom is a pretty awesome place to feel comfortable doing this.

Rikki
A timely topic for me as I had juty duty just last week. In my case, I went drab. While I am getting braver with my Dee persona, this was one thing I didn't want to mess with.
A girl i know was recently on jury duty..and one of the jury selection questions was "do you belong to any organized groups?". She responded in the affirmative...triess. And then she was questioned about it....answering honestly. She was selected. If I was asked..I would have said the same..after all...its best to be up front than have that come back later and mess up a trial..which is serious stuff. I wasn't asked...wasn't selected..went home early.
But however you handle it..its an important part of our system to sit on a jury..inconvenient, yes, but part of our justice. So good going Rikki!!!

Good to see you on here, Rikki. I can see why you'd be nervous, too. I am glad all that worked out. That you can do jury duty is a great thing. I am not familiar with anyone talking about reformiing the jury system, but it would be more fair if the self-employed could afford to serve. It also doesn't seem right to me that employers have to subsidize their workers who do serve. But this isn't hot topics--I just note that in passing. You're a brave gal, Ms. Rikki. Now you know one more area where you can walk with confidence. Good going!
