The other day I was listening to some old music, an album called Edgar Winter's White Trash. Great music by the way. Anyway, on the album cover Edgar WInter is wearing a fur coat. There is just something about the way he is wearing it.....So I looked at the cover of another of his records, called They Only Come Out At Night. And the whole band is in some sort of unisex drag. Never quite realized that before.
This was mid 70's rock and roll, just before disco. Contemporarys with the debut of Queen. I remember about this time watching Peter Wolf with J. Geils perform in a miniskirt. No inserts, he was definitely a man in a dress, not trying to pass.
But back to the subject. Has anyone read anything about was Edgar Winter doing this for stage flash or was it something he really liked?

I did read your post and I definitely reemember listening to the J Geils Band and the Edgar Winter Group, but I don' t remember seeing an album cover or having any idea what they looked like, just enjoyed most of their music!

PS: I think that the reason that not many girls responded it's because these groups were before their time??

Speaking of glam rock/hair bands - was anyone here ever a fan of '80s group "Poison"?
And do any of you remember the album cover for "Look What The Cat Dragged In?
It consisted only of head shots arranged in individual squares, and all four guys were fully done up as gals with extreme make-up and big, teased hair - they looked like total glamazon knock-outs. Awesome!
As a novice, closeted crossdresser at the time, I was totally blown away not only by how glamorous they looked, but also by how gutsy they were to pose that way for the cover.

At the time, any form of glam rock did little for me, and I didn't pay much attention to it. It seemed like a show biz gimmick, with most of the artists. My crossdressing up to that time had had nothing to do with going out or taking on a female ID, and I never CDed during the 70s, when all of the glam came and went.
But sometime after I started dressing and going out, I suddenly remembered that album title you mentioned: "They only come out at night." and I laughed, because I realized what it might be referring to.
80s glam metal I've written about before. The look didn't inspire me, because it was carefully designed to retain masculinity. No skirts, and no breast forms. They were just guys, made up to look pretty. (I did like the album cover that Leslie referred to, though. )
As to Andrea's question about Edgar Winter: did he really like dressing up? I've never heard one way or the other. I believe that David Bowie really did like it. I also read, in Danny Sugerman's book about Jim Morrison, Wonderland, that Iggy Pop would go on binges where he totally dressed and acted like a woman. It bothered Sugerman, because he said that Iggy made a good-looking woman! That did intrigue me.
