Chevy pickup commercial

Post by Gaven McLaren »

Has any one else here seen the new ad on tv for the new Chevy pickup. I know you are wondering why I am posting this here. Well first off it is a funny ad. Second it somewhat relates. In the ad there are 5 guys in this pickup and in the back ground you hear the song Feel Like a Woman Well they move to the interior of the truck and the guy in the middle of the back seat is singing along.

Hi Gaven,

I heard about the commercial from a female friend and just saw it last night. My take on it is that it is meant on one level to reinforce the masculinity associated with the pickup truck by making it clear that this guy (singing "I feel like a woman") is out of place in it. On another level, however, it helps legitimize the possibility that men can identify with women and femininity. But, it does it in a way that heightens the tensions within men's psyches between the part that can identify with femininity and the more dominant parts that do not. There are six men in the pickup, and one of them is feminine-identified. Taken together, these men and their reactions might be viewed as a representation of the current male psyche. The minority, pro-feminine part naturally makes the other five uneasy. But this tension offers the opportunity for a resolution that will integrate the discordant part.

Just by portraying this inner tension in outer terms, the commercial may shake-up (subvert) people's thinking patterns and at least plants a seed in our subconscious. It's another sign of the times, indicating that the definition of what it is to be a man is contradictory, in flux, and in some ways broadening.

Wow, I can't believe I said all that. I hope that isn't too intellectual for this board. In any case this t-girl really adores Shania's song. It certainly speaks to me.

Hugs,

"I feel like a woman" Laura :)

Laura, you transgendered deconstructionist, you!

No, I haven't seen the ad but, then again, my TV's usually on only to listen to my XBox soundtracks or to watch movies.

An ad I have seen, though, is a local one from the province's milk producers association. Their current campaign is: "A glass of milk is good. But two is better." Well, in this particular ad, we see a fairly macho guy (yes, in sweatpants and a T) sprawled on the living-room couch watching TV (a football game, sounds like). The camera's viewpoint is from the TV set itself, so we're looking at the guy face on. He's drinking a glass of milk (while watching football--yeah right! ). Anyway, he's barefoot and, as he watches the game, his toes start distractedly toying with his wife's high heels, laying on the floor next to the couch. Sure enough, he soon leans over and puts them on, straps and all. When his wife comes into the living-room, our man is watching the game intently, still wearing her heels, one knee crossed over the other, his leg swinging up and down, glass of milk in hand. She stares down at him for a beat, then says, "What are you doing?" He looks up at her and says, very nonchalantly, "I'm having a glass of milk." Another beat, and then she says, "But you had one earlier!" In a slightly miffed tone, he replies, "So? I'm having another one!" before turning his attention back to the screen.

It's a great ad, very funny, not so much for the incongruity of a man in heels watching football, but for the fact that his wearing heels seemed like the most natural thing in the world for both he and his wife. Sign o' the times, I guess.

By the way, I also like Shania Twain's (or Tania Swain, as my father calls her) I Feel Like A Woman. However, one that's much more up my alley is Portishead's Glory Box, a very seductive song. You'll find it on their album called Dummy.

Love,
CJ

Hi CJ (I knew I'd attract you with that message),

And I don't even like deconstruction. But, it fit so well with this ad, I couldn't resist. The milk ad is great too. And of course, there have been a lot of recent movies with that theme. I hope cding will be viewed as natural by society. But, we can't wait. We've got to nudge history along a bit. The week after next I'm going out dressed almost fully in front of a group of sympathetic guys. And I don't even feel scared! Wow!!! I'm moving forward! (Of course these are friendlies not the public at large)

I'll have to look at that album you recommended. I hope it's not too cold up there in Montreal. It sure feels cold here (and I just shoveled the driveway for the third time in two days).

Warm hugs,

Laura
