Marilyn Monroe, first and foremost.
Jessi Colter. When I was in high school I discovered the "Outlaw" movement in country music and she was the original female outlaw.
Dina Meyer. I've had a thing for her since I first saw her.

After the same reply from me as everyone else about wife, sister, daughters, mom and so on lets go to three others.
There was a woman who lived across the street from me some years ago. She had three kids, no man, and not much money. She worked part time for a church but it didn't pay very well at all. Sounds overwhelming, right?
Now the good part There were always other kids living there. She didn't get any extra money from the government for them or anything like that. Folks from all over knew that if you were going to a rehab for a month or something, or just needed a place for your child in the summer because you worked two jobs and there was no other family available, that you sent your kids to her. There was nothing official, these were just people that she happened to know in some way. She liked kids and they liked her. Early on all thekids there especially her own learned to pull their own weight around the house. You just did it.
Here's the best part. Kids who had very disturbed families, and kids who were sometimes a lot of trouble themselves, somehow rose to the occaision. When they stayed at her home they became good kids. When I asked her about this she just said that God gave her guidance. But she never tried to push any of her beliefs on me.
She was originally from Alabama. She moved back there a few years ago. I miss her.

Koko Taylor. Sang the blues magnificently her whole life but never succumbed to them. An awesome voice that scared the daylights out of the recording companies because it was so unusual but eventually someone had the guts to record her.
Linda Greenlaw. Author of The Hungry Sea. Defies just about every expectation there is without even trying to, and doesn't seem to care either.

Hi Kristen,
One of her children is grown and lives here in town. I run into her once in a while. That is about it. I also run into the mother of some of the children she cared for every now and then.
I have come to think that there are a lot more people like this around than we think. We just don't hear about them that much
