Sophie, aiming the camera is more important than how close you are, do you have yourself centered somewhat, left to right and up and down. the focus sensor is most likely centeredin the relation to the viewfinder. How far up from your eye level is the camera position? Are you getting an image that is centered but out of focus. to me it sounds like you need to bring the camera down a bit, either angle the camera more or move the camera closer to eye level . If you imagine a line from the lens to your waist what would the angle be? More than 35 degrees? than your room is to small to do the effect you want, (I think). You may have to try to move back so you can decrease the angle that the camera is, when it is pointing down. I am trying to visualize the look you are looking for and the angle is surprisingly very steep. to get your whole body in the picture and still stay in focus. That's if we are looking for the same picture.
How high is your ceiling and how high is the camera?
I took a picture of two guys a party, they were back to back, i ran my tripod up all the way and had two exstentions on it. I had to get a 6 foot ladder to reach the camera, but they loved the shot and it was worth the try. this was in a ball room so it was not a problem with the ceiling.
