New Experiences - I went to the hair salon!

Post by Melyssa Anne »

My wife(Stormy) and I are planning a girls road trip (complete with convertible) for this summer around the 4th of July – taking ourselves several hundred miles from here (look out Thelma and Louise!!). Stormy suggested several months ago that I consider re-styling my hair somewhat to allow me to not use a wig on this road trip – I would feel a lot less stressed about hair and things, and be a lot cooler without a wig. We also believed that, with the right style, I could comb/brush it differently and have it still look like a guy cut/style. So I let my hair grow some and this week took the big leap to get it cut at a salon in Missy mode.

I discovered in getting ready to do this that wigs provide a lot of comfort etc as far as anonymity and comfort in knowing your appearance is appropriate. For me, I have almost no fear in ever being recognized with one of my wigs on – I barely recognize myself at times. But take that wig off --- and its just you and your makeup and how that hair is styled. Voice and everything else becomes that much more important if you are trying to blend in with the rest of the women out there.

I was the most nervous I had been since going out for the first time 3 years ago and had to talk myself into leaving the house without my wig, and then again to get myself into the salon. I did go to one about 25 miles from home (I live in the Chicago area so just had to go to another suburb) to minimize the risk of anyone specifically recognizing me.

All of that worry and knee knocking was for nothing. I never got a second look or questioning glance from anyone. Stormy teased me a little cuz she said she knows I present well and wouldn’t have any problems.

My stylist was delightful as were the other ladies getting their hair done. We chatted about all sorts of things, and when she was done,I ended up with a short pixie -- Its very cute. A couple things I noticed vastly different from a guys haircut. Time….time spent washing and rinsing my hair by the stylist, time spent on the cut, care given to the cut, and then all the time to play with the hair with the mousse to get it just so. But it was worth it!! When she was finishing up my hair, her next appointment came in, and the women complimented the stylist and told me how beautiful I looked and how cute my cut was. That was awesome and very gratifying!!!

And we were right about being able to make it look like a guy style when I want to.

I am so excited about how this all turned out and am so looking forward to the trip in July!!

Melyssa...thats so fantastic that you can do somthing with your real hair. So many of us have that (ugh) male pattern baldness thing..which means wigs. But thats ok, like you say, hair totally changes you, its our crowning glory! Best of luck on your trip....you should love it!!!

Hi all,

Kudos to you, Melyssa (and to Stormy, too) for having gotten yourself to a hair salon. Isn't it a blast? I had the opportunity to do this a couple of years ago, too. I was paranoid as all hell, just being crossdressed in broad daylight. But, like you said, the stylist (as well as the waiting customers) were all really nice to me. Aside from styling my hair, the stylist--her name's Rita--also waxed my eyebrows, shaping them into a more feminine arch. When I left the salon, I headed downtown and even went to the office, hoping to catch my colleague, Patricia (who, as it turned out, was absent that afternoon).

Anyway, it's a great first step, Melyssa. Congrats! Although I've done it only that one time, I'm sure it'll get easier the more often you get your hair done. Also, you're one lucky person to have a gal like Stormy by your side. Treat her well.

Oh, and have fun on that trip this summer! Sounds like the two of you are in for a grand adventure.

Love,
CJ

Melyssa does look fabulous!! ...and she had so much fun getting her hair done and then this weekend we went out of town to see how she did with styling on her own for a golf outing. She did wear her wig to the casino since there is a higher probability of me being spotted (I'm not exactly a wall flower) - we won enough to cover our weekend and then spent yesterday at the zoo and more golf in the afternoon. All in all a fantastic weekend for the girls. We most definitely did not forget Memorial Day or all those men and women tht secured our freedom. Melyssa is amazing and fun.

Way to go, Melyssa!

The first time I went to a hair salon en femme it was on a spur of the moment whim, and the haircut ended up being easy to wear in male or female mode. I, too, was amazed at how much more care went into the haircut, hair by hair, than in male mode. I've only been back to a hair salon in male mode twice since then (it's been several years now), and both times it was a hurried snip, snip, next customer, and the results were mediocre at best. So now I always go en femme, and I always end up getting the kind of care and attention to detail that I've grown to love. I always end up with a great dual-mode haircut that way, too.

Now when I need a haircut, I don't even consider going en drab.

Congratulations on your winnings, and have a great road trip!!

since I was a child I dreamed of going to beauty salon, I have great hair and in 2007 I grew out as much as I could coming up with every excuse to not get a hair cut, on a day off while the wife was away on business I lived my dream, calling around to different salons to get a wash and roller set. I got all doll up and got my hair done, it was great. I wish I could grow my hair long and be able to style it and color it. I was away overnight as a woman and have this beautiful long red wig. Since I was staying in a hotel overnight I decided to set my wig in rollers while wearing it. I wrapped in scarf and when to bed after I woke I keep the rolllers in for a couple of more hours. When I took them out my hair(wig) was so beautiful I did not want to take my wig off. I would love to do that with my hair,WOW!
