Shopping for makeup

Hi all,

I wasn't dressed. I have been using Maybelline Sand foundation. It has
been the best out of many I tried. I tried many combinations and
concealers, but couldn't get an even color on my face. I use face hair
bleach and then shave when I go out.

I decided to try a upper end department store here. I walked through
Sat and they were so busy, and all the pretty girls of all ages! I shopped
for a while and went back. I found an open counter on the end. I stopped
and looked. A pretty petite 30 something woman asked nicely and with a
kind smile if she could help me. Still embarrassed I told her that if I
offended her in anyway I would leave. I told her that I love to crossdress.
Sincerely she said, that's ok I will still help you if I can.

I explained my foundation problem. She asked me if I would like a
sheer, medium coverage, or full coverage. I told her I had little
experience and that was why I risked coming to speak with someone.
We talked and then she suggested a product. She got a sample and
asked if she could put a little on my wrist. She did and rubbed it in
with a finger tip. After 4 samples we picked one.

When asked if she could help with anything else. I asked about a
setting powder and after that eyelid colour. She looked at my eyes and
suggested two twin colours. We talked at length about both the
eye shadow and the powder. We selected one of each.

She was so wonderful, kind and caring. Even though I wasn't dressed,
she helped me to feel like I was just one of the girls she was helping
to look and feel their best. She said she would like to hear how the
products work out for me. Never did she push to buy more.

I felt as much a woman as I have ever, even when dressed.

It was expensive beyond what I expected. But if they do work for
me, I will be one happy girl. I'll write again when I am able to dress
and go out.

I am a child yet in some respects. Being devoid of meaningful
human relationships most of my life (other than my wife) I give
great importance to those that help me on my journey.

I would love any stories, comments or advice,
Kersten

Hi Kersten,

That's great. Sounds like you had a fulfilling time. :)

It's amazing how many people out there accept those of us who are TG'd if we are polite, confident, and respectful to the person we are dealing with.

Bravo Kersten =D> and thank you for sharing your story here with us (and our lurkers)

Kersten,

That's a great story! You showed more bravery than me _P .

I hope you are more satisfied with your look with that professional advice and more compatible colors.

Kersten,

Perhaps you could share with the rest of us a little of what you learned at the counter. That way we may not have to ask all of the same questions you so bravely had to.

Nuff Luv,

Erica Shade

Kersten;
Way to go girl!!!! I second the request that you might share what you learned from the GG at the make-up counter. Are you a blonde or brunette? And what tint make-up did she suggest for your hair color? Inquiring minds want to know!
Love ya,
Deborah

Hi Kersten,

Wow, that was a very brave act. I have always read about girls going in for a makeover or working with a makeup specialist but I have never had the nerve to try it myself, and I'm sure I need to badly! Maybe one day. If so, I will be here telling everyone about it! ((G)) <oooo>

I have many great experences buying makeup. Merle Norman sales ladies have been very, very helpful. I've also had great success with Mary Kay ladies. For me, color choices are very difficult to do "on line" or looking at the displays in stores so I need personal help and to actually try the makeup on. It's a real adventure!

Hi Kersten,

That's wonderful! It sounds like you found a great source for finding the makeup that's just right for you. (plus an eyeful of all those beautiful young GGs) As far as how much you choose to spend for certain makeup items, foundation is one area where you really want to get the best quality you can find. Good for you! ``5

Hi All,

I'm am somewhat embarrassed. I wish I had a lot of good information
to offer as all of you have given me. All I can do is be truthful.
So here it goes.

Going to talk to someone about make-up was the first for me. I am
not educated in making my face the most femme possible. I only recently started reading articles on the subject the last few months. Danielle
gave me a woman's type magazine internet address that has begun
to help me get more information.

I was like a junior high girl buying her first make-up from a beautiful
woman taking care to be kind and helpful. It is my picture in my
avatar. I have medium brown hair with some lighter highlights that
now are becoming more gray. My hair is fine. She tried some
foundations on my wrist. She looked at me and said she thought that
it would even my skin tone where under my nose and chin are
lighter in color. Trying it, it does shade without looking heavy, but I
was so disappointed that I was still light under my nose. I still wonder
if I don't need two colors. The powder was fine and beautiful and set the
foundation again without looking like my picture or like Robin Williams
in Misses Doubtfire. Wasn't that his name? I took the brown and
gold tan shimmer two color eye make-up. It applied easily, evenly
and smoothly. My wife liked it much more than the Maybellene,
Revlon and Cover Girl that I have been using. I didn't like the brown
on the eyelid so much. I had liked the blue and tan but went conservative.
I think I will get the dark blue shimmer too. It looks to me that blues are
coming back this year. I like a little color. The wig I am wearing is close to
my hair color.

It wasn't a make over, though I would love that. The brand was Lancome.
It is way to expensive for me. The three items came to $80. I only ever
spent that much or more on a wig. I did call and get an Avon number for a
local representative. I don't know yet if I will call her or not. The man
at the Avon 800 number told me that representatives are not schooled
in behavior toward crossdressers and it will be her decision on how she
will react. We are free so I guess that only makes sense. It scares me
to trust someone on the phone. I'm only a good judge of people in
person. Would a Mary Kay rep be a better choice? I know nothing
about Avon or Mary Kay.

I loved all of your replies, I only wish I had something more to offer.
It was still a wonderful experience for me.

Kersten,

Great story! What an experience! And thank you for sharing that.

My wife used to work as an assistant manager in a cosmetic store that had a hair salon inside it. She would tell me all the time about CDs coming in and buying makeup, getting their hair done or having a makeover when there was a cosmetician on hand. I tried to imagine doing that myself and just couldn't muster up the courage. We always think something bad would come of it but Kersten, you proved the opposite.

As Beauty said. "It's amazing how many people out there accept those of us who are TG'd if we are polite, confident, and respectful to the person we are dealing with" We all like to be treated that way and you showed how well the kindness is returned.

Thank you Kersten. =D>
