Being unemployed again, and now for long enough to benefit from a UI benefit extension, I've begun to wonder what I could do with myself that would be more productive than sleeping all day.
I have now a significant investment in digital SLR photography equipment which is mostly idle but for three times a year. I am a "professional" only because I charge for those three occasions (outside the home). I have friends who know a lot more than I do about the profession. I have wondered if there would be any interest among you in coming to visit, and have your photos taken by a supportive someone, instead of the self-timer on your own camera. Initially, I don't see charging for this, for a multitude of reasons, including that the cost of travel to where I live is perhaps already a formidable barrier for most.
This is all totally preliminary. It wouldn't happen overnight, or even the next 90 days. My wife and I are both pack-rats, so the house has to undergo a major renovation first, and I have not even discussed the idea with her. Also, I would not be able to offer lodging, makeup assistance, nor much in the way of footwear or accessories.
So for the sake of the poll question, please try to disassociate the idea of me taking your pictures, and consider the idea only in the abstract. Also, most ideas are really pretty stupid, so don't feel at all inhibited about blasting this one out of the water if you feel that way.

Hi, Bernice -
Considering the part of your post that I have emphasized, above, your poll is not a 'solicitation of services' to our members and may remain.
In addition, you have stated that if you were to offer your services as a photographer (at some possible point in the future), you would not be charging fees. You are not advertising a business venture and, therefore, you are not violating any of our rules.

I've had great fun with my little digi-cam, trying different outfits and taking my own pics, or getting my big sister June or my GGfriend Fiona to snap me. Most of the results are rubbish but based on the theory of "Monkeys and typewriters" the occasional good one gets through. But a professional photo shoot along with a professional makeover would be any girls dream.
Love

I answered "other".
There are a couple of other forum members who are also members of the same support group I belong to.
I provide one on one instruction and advice to other members on computers, software, and digital photography both at the meetings and by email.
Most of the members dress femme at the meetings and several of us bring digital cameras and take pictures. We exchange photos by use of my laptop and our flash drives.
I have taken some digital photography classes and will be taking more in January and February. The instructor uses the Photoshop Elements 8 in the classes and recommended downloading the 30 day trial version so we can try things ourselves. I just got the full version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 as my main Christmas gift and a book on how to use it.
I have had my good quality point and shoot camera for a bit over 2 years and haven't outgrown it's capabilities yet. I don't feel like I need a digital SLR yet.
One of my 2009 resolutions was to increase my knowledge and use of makeup and I eventually did to some extent. Since July I have worn makeup at all of the monthly support group meetings.
For 2010 I would like to set up a discrete photo area at home that would be an upgrade over the guest bedroom that I use now. A photo area that's quick to set up and with adequate lighting would be an incentive to have more photo sessions.
After I get things set up and am satisfied with my self portrait results, I might consider inviting some support group members for photo sessions.

Thanks to all who voted or posted.
At 17 - 5, it is clear that this idea is not worth pursuing on an active basis. I'm glad I asked!
If anyone is terribly disappointed by this turnout, feel free to PM me, and I'll see what I can do (for free of course), but it obviously isn't worth me ramping up to do this in any organized way.
Hugs,
Bernice
