Donating Platelets

Post by Davita »

Got the time to be treated like a queen? Visit the Red Cross. I'm one of those girls who doesn't donate blood because it's better that I donate platelets. They set up the machine, plug my two arms in and make sure I'm comfortable for the next 75 to 85 minutes. I may not be able to move my arms, but they are always willing to scratch a nose, cover you with a blanket, and do what else they can do to make you comfortable. The very 1st time I donated, I was Davita. Now it just depends on my out time schedule as to which of me goes to donate.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/davita_far ... 2/sizes/o/ for my past Monday donation.

Hi Davita

I too have donated both blood and platelets over 60 times. Glad to see I am not the only one.

Best wishes
Susan

I use to donate from 1973 to 1986, until I was turned down due to high blood pressure and diabetes.

Looking over the info at http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/12233.cfm these two conditions aren't necessarily prohibitive any more. It does say I need a doctors permission since I had a stroke, but none of the meds I take are on the list except aspirin and possibly a blood thinner.

Guess it's time to try and donate again.

I would like to give a great big hug and thank you to all you ladies that donate blood and platelets. I think that is wonderful!

Unfortunately, I am unable to donate (or was last time I tried). Because of my blood disease history, the local blood bank declined my offer. I was diagnosed with aplastic anemia just before I turned ten. Was in the hospital for about half a year. Got lots of blood transfusions, though. My parents were both 50 gallon donors in their later years, in part to honor all of the donors from whom I received blood.

So, from one who has benefited from the giving of others, I salute all of you who donate. It is the gift of life.

Thank you, very much!

Love,
Alana
