....And It Happened On Halloween!

By coincidence, I was out of town on Halloween weekend and decided this was the perfect time for Sarah to make her Halloween debut. I got to my motel about 10pm and decided to practice putting on makeup. Of course, once I was made up, I had to check my look fully dressed. I wasn’t planning to go out that night, but my sense of adventure got the better of me. My room did not have direct access to the outside, so it meant walking down two long hallways to get to my car. Well, I was going to have to do this sometime. No time like the present, so out I went.

I went to Walmart. I worked up my nerve and headed for the door. Two girls came out as I approached. They were in costumes and didn’t even seem to see me. I needed a hair dryer and a ladies watch, but mostly I just walked around and enjoyed the freedom. There were few people in the store and some were in costume. Nobody paid me any attention until I
got to the checkout. I got about 15 feet from the cashier and she smiled a pleasant smile.

I wasn’t hungry, but I noticed that the wait staff at Steak And Shake were all girls ,so I went in. The hostess saw me and smiled. She sat me at one of her tables and I ordered a milkshake. She asked me if I was making this my first outing. I said yes. She complemented my hair and was more than accepting. She made me feel like I really belonged. I have never felt like that while dressed(even in a support group meeting.) The
girl that cashed me out smiled a smile that would melt any guy. They called me “Hon” and "Darlin’ “ and I felt great.

I decided that night I would attend my business in my “costume.” This wasn’t job related or anything, so it was okay. I didn’t get a bit of sleep.
The next morning ,it was 32 degrees and breezy outside and there I was, pumping gas in a dress with a billowy skirt. I went back to Steak And Shake for breakfast on Saturday. The cashier from the night before was still there. A guy waited on me and called me “maam” repeatedly. I had to
remember he was referring to me! The 1st time he said this, I looked at the girl and she at me and we both nearly cracked up.

On to the business. This was probably a mistake. I felt out of place the whole time and left early. Mostly because I felt uncomfortable, but partly because I was really sleepy and it was getting more boring all the time.
Of course, I didn’t go back to the motel. More Walmart. I walked through the local mall from one end to the other without being bothered. I even went into Victoria’s Secret and bought some things. I had never been in
one before. With the VS bag in hand, I went to the motel to try my new things on. I changed my dress and went back out. My next stop was CATO where I tried on and bought a nice top and gypsy skirt(only$9 on sale!). The girls acted like it was perfectly natural for me to do this. A lady was leaving as I was and she talked with me very friendly. I took an
immediate liking to her.

I finally fooled somebody. Going into Big Lots, a guy asked for
money for veterans. When I said I would give when I came back out, he looked very confused. I don’t have a female voice yet. I did donate when I came out.

Back to Steak And Shake to see the waitress from the night before and to eat. The only table open in her section was next to a table with some guy already sitting there. He must have stared at me for 2 minutes. He didn’t approve. I didn’t look at him. I always flip through those cards they
have with the desserts on them. Saturday was no different. He left.
The girl was just as friendly as the night before. She said she loved my shoes and didn’t know how I could walk in them. She said she couldn’t do it. I told her I did it very gingerly. It was breezy all day and it was all I could do to keep my dress from blowing over my head! The wind would have been hardly noticeable to anyone wearing pants.
Back to the motel and sleep.

Halloween arrived and I was oddly nervous. I had to remind myself what I had already done this weekend and I was being silly. A stop at Denny’s brought some looks, but no problems.
I went to a Target and picked up a dvd. I got in a checkout line because the cashier was pretty. The lady in front of me was having some kind of problem. She said to me: "Sorry, maam, looks like you got in the
wrong line." I told her I wasn’t a maam, but that’s what I was going for. She said she forgot it was Halloween and I acted like I was embarrased not to have a costume. I wasn’t fooling too many people and saw no point in being mistaken for a girl by one person. I found out I am not really passable, so I should be comfortable being around people who know the truth.

I found one of those outlet malls and decided to go for a walk. Still breezy and I was still being careful to keep my dress as still as possible. As I was headed back to the car, two teenage boys were walking in my direction and one said loudly: ”Oh my G**!” I figured
the boy spotted me, but I don’t know. He was probably checking out my legs, saw my face and was afraid someone saw him. Then he tried to pass his embarrasement onto me. I ignored him. Of course, he may have been talking about something else. Who knows?

I found a Macys and gathered up my courage for a makeover. A very pretty girl did the work and did a nice job. She made me feel like I fit in. The other girls gave me alot of compliments. A walk through the mall and another Victoria’s Secret purchase and I was off again.

When I got back home, I decided to look up a girl I know to see if she recognized me. She wasn’t around. Off again to the nearest small city and another Steak And Shake. I asked the waitress if she knew and she said: “yeah, but it’s cool.” I meant if she knew I was a guy, but she spotted the CD and was very nice. One more Walmart and home.

As much fun as I had ,it was good to get those shoes and the bra off. This morning, I was ready to go out again, but I am just too tired. Two plus days walking everywhere in high heels and I had to get used to walking without them. Has that happened to you?

That’s my story. I hope you enjoyed it.

Quite a story, Sarah, and yes, I did enjoy it. Once you're really out there and the adrenaline surge hits, you can get a lot of mileage out it. It sounds like you did just that.

I was a little disoriented by the one incident where you were thinking that a girl was pretending to be fooled by you? Did I get that right? And you're thinking that that's all it was, and you're not going to get excited by one person's 'mistake,' if that's what it was.

Passing is an iffy thing, but blending in and going unnoticed is certainly possible. Glad you got out and had a good time.

Aaahhh Halloween.... Nothing like a trial run and no worries. I didn't quite pass my first Halloween. I hoped I could, but I wasn't going out blind to how god or not good I looked.

I had a destination that already knew me so again, passing was paramount, just a hope.

Congrats for a mostly wonderful time.

If you mean when I was in Target, the lady did think I was female. She must not have looked too closely at me.When she said she forgot it was Halloween,I joked that I didn't know it was Halloween and I should have gotten a costume. My story is a bit long(a bit?I think I might have Stephen King's editor) and sometimes I get ahead of myself wanting to put all the details in at the same time.

I don't think it's too long at all, Sarah. All I would ask is that you use a space between paragraphs, so the text isn't all bunched up together. It just makes it a little harder to read, for me.

Thank you for suggesting this.I want my story to be interesting to other people and I appreciate the constructive criticism.

Ditto with Anita's comments; also, proper spacing at the end of punctuation, and from one sentence to another would be greatly appreciated. After all, that is the proper way to write, and then your text would be easier for everyone to read. I was getting a headache just trying to deciper the end of clauses, sentences and paragraphs.

Thank you!

I'd like to chime in with Anita and SL. First off it looks like you went back and editted a bit, thank you.

As someone who does some creative writing at times, I appreciate that not everyone has the same ideas about sentance structure and punctuation. However misspelled words, lack of punctuation, and most of all improper spacing functions to make a post hard to read, and when this happens I usually just skip over it. It seems to me that this is more of a problem on a computer screen than on a printed page. What works in a novel does not neccesarily work in a post.

The key is -
The way you write or speak should not detract from the content of what you are saying or writing.
