My New York trip: chronicle of a transgender girl

Post by Steffie »

Hi girls,

Well I went to New York last week (back to my old haunts) and was able to be a woman 6 days in a row, a record for consecutive days for me :)

Overall it was a positive enjoyable experience where I did everything from flying en-femme to riding the subway to eating in nice mainstream restaurants. After all the time I had been sick this year, it was finally nice to get out for an extended period and just be me. I never felt so relaxed. :)

I stayed with 2 close friends while I was there. They made sure I got to and from the airport as I never took public transportation to and from JFK.

Wednesday
The first night, I flew out of Charlotte (piece of cake) and wore a red turtleneck with jeans and black suede boots. My friends met me at the airport where we took public transportation to their apartments. I wasn't too familiar with Queens (more on that later) but they explained things to me about how best to get around. I mostly stayed at my one friend's apartment but did go out to the local store there to pick up a couple of things for my friend. It was a short walk.

Thursday
I wore an aqua turtleneck with gray knit pants and other black boots. I went to my other close friend's apartment in Far Rockaway (Queens) and then took the bus/subway into Manhattan. I walked around Times Square and browsed stores like Macy's. I then took the A train back to my friend's apartment late. I didn't realize at the time but the A train ends up at 3 different locations and I was on the wrong one. I didn't realize until I was on the subway and looked at the map and figured that out. I got off at a junction point and caught the correct A train but didn't get home until like 1 A.M. It was cold too but I wore a black beret, scarf and gloves and I did have a short walk from the subway station to my friend's apartment. Of course I tried to be aware of my surroundings on both the subway and while walking and it was uneventful.

Friday
I wore a black and white tunic top with a black turtleneck and black tights with black booties. This time I wore a bright sparkly bluish scarf and beret with my coat outside when walking. I met another transgender friend from online (who I had never met before but had chatted with many times the last few years). We met at the Port Authority in Manhattan and walked around for a short time. We then took the subway to Little Italy and had dinner in a nice Italian restaurant. The owner there was nice to us and very accepting. After dinner we went to another cafe near there for tea and dessert. That was also nice. We had a great time. I then took my friend back to bus station, walked around a bit and then took the subway for home real late. The only minor glitch was when I was walking home the last block I passed some low life and he proceeded to make rude remarks at me but of course I ignored it and kept walking. I was watching him out of the corner of my eye while walking but he didn't follow me.. I was ready for him though. As is usually the case though, God was with me. This was the only negative thing that happened to me the whole trip.

Saturday
I wore a long tan/bran sweater dress with light brown leggings and long brown boots. I once again went into Manhattan and this time had dinner in Chinatown. I even was able to use chopsticks and picked up everything including grains of rice. I then went to my old favorite Lesbian dance club after dinner. I stayed and danced for a while. My one Lesbian friend who I was staying with met me there as she had to work during the day. I left the club about 1 A.M. and we went home on the subway.

Sunday
I wore black striped slacks and a cute pink top with black boots. Of course I had to wear pink once (favorite color). :)

Another TG friend was supposed to meet me in Manhattan but she canceled on me. So I went out with my 2 Lesbian friends and we had dinner in Little Italy. I was so impressed with the restaurant that I was at on Friday that I went back there. Once again the food was excellent and the owner came over to out table to say hi to me. I told him I loved his restaurant and that I lived in Carolina and it was hard to get food like that down South. LOL

At the end of the meal after I paid the check as I was walking out, the owner called me over and said he had a dessert for us (taramisu). He gave it to us free of charge! That was very nice of him. :)

We then went back to my friend's apartment early (I had an early flight the next morning). That brings me to.....

Monday
I grabbed a few short hours of sleep and got up very early and my 2 close friends went with me to the airport (which gave me peace of mind) where we took public transportation. I got ready in record time too and just stayed with the same outfit! :) I wasn't sure what to expect from the airport as I never flew out of that airport en-femme. Once again it was cold.

I got there and checked in, Unlike Charlotte airport, check-in was a bit more complex. I opted not to go through their radiation scanner but wanted the human search instead. They called a lady TSA employee and she did it. No problems. :) I just read stories about how scanner pics can be saved and I didn't want my body scan ending up on You Tube or something crazy like that. I'm a modest girl. LOL The search was uneventful and I didn't feel "violated" like you read about so much nowadays with pat-downs. Check-in was uneventful and I caught my flight to Charlotte.

When I got to Charlotte and got my luggage I decided to go to their local mall first before leaving for home. I walked through the whole mall, browsing all the stores. I ended up getting home in early evening.

All in all the most relaxing vacation I have had. :)

Steffie

I liked the part about the restaurant owner, and your second visit there. That is an important part of what we do when we go out--being pleasant, and showing them we're just people, same as they are. I was in NYC as a gal two times, and I really enjoyed my time there.
