Been awhile! Halloween!

Post by Laura Bird »

Hey girls!

So it's been a while. I used to dress and post a little more regularly a few years ago, when my job was such that I worked from home full time. Since transitioning to a new job I've had almost NO time for Laura time. :(

Sadly since it's been 2 years, some of my stuff doesn't really fit anymore... and as closet space got thin, some of my stuff was donated back to Goodwill (it wasn't being worn much - might as well let someone else use it!) In fact I wasn't sure when I was going to really get to dress again (or find motivation to) until a few weeks ago. A group of friends is hosting a Halloween party and the host (male) announced that he was going as a bride, and needed a bridesmaid... and before I could really even think about it, the wife said, "We're IN!" My wife hit up 5 different Goodwill's in the area dress shopping, came home with a bucket load of dresses. We found two dresses that looked FANTASTIC and we both liked. One was more of a black cocktail dress (not really bridesmaids-y but fit PERFECTLY) and one that was an official bridesmaids dress from David's Bridal that didn't quite fit right and really needed some alterations. So the plan was to alter it, but then after thinking about it, "This is probably gonna cost, what, $100 at least to alter it... how much does a new dress cost that fits properly from the get-go?" So back to the stores we went... this time to Nordstrom Rack, brought home another stack... but none of them matched up to the first two we both liked. We decided to call David's Bridal and see if they had any in stock in my size (and also to see what it cost new - it was $8 at Goodwill...) One thing lead to another, and we found ourselves at the David's Bridal. The sales girls were fantastic - they pulled probably 15 dresses off the racks and sent me to the back dressing room to try them all on, and we finally settled on one (looks AWESOME! and was only $120) Then the tough part became - which dress to wear? That's when we learned about a local crossdresser specialty shop's ("Transformations By Rori) Halloween party... perfect! I can wear the black one to Rori's party, and the David's Bridal one to the other party. (Now the only fear is that the bride is going to come as an "ugly bride"... and that folks may look at me a little cross-eyed since I may look "too" good... thankfully they all know that my wife is competitive and won't put it past her wanting to make the bridesmaid outshine the bride!)

So last Saturday was the party at Rori's. It felt pretty great to get out, I have to say! The party itself was ok I guess - it went by fast and I feel like I spent so much time chit chatting that I didn't really take the opportunity to "take it all in" so to speak. The drive out, I was nervous... the walk across the parking lot, was nervous. Then sat down, was nervous - but met a few other girls who were also nervous so we found that in common, and the discussion went from there. Next thing I knew, it was time to go! In fact I lost track of how I was dressed for a little bit - and shocked myself when I went to the restroom and looked in the mirror! It was a nice surprise :)

So it was fun, though I guess, almost a little bit anti-climatic? Like the idea in my head was built up so much? Anybody else experience that? I kinda wish I just had time to walk around and just enjoy it without needing to interact with anybody. Maybe that's just me.

Anyways, so the other Halloween party is tomorrow night. Nervous because it's NOT a CD'er party, I'm worried someone is going to tell me I pull it off a little TOO well. But the hell with it - let's do it!

Wife convinced me to get my chest waxed this afternoon (working from home to get ready for tomorrow in between meetings)... holy hell was THAT an experience I don't think I'll be repeating soon! Super smooth now but oy vey!

I put up a few pics in my gallery of the LBD from last Saturday and tomorrow's bridesmaids gown.

You lucky girl. All that dress shopping and having your wife helping must have been heaven. Have fun tomorrow night and I'm sure you will out shine the bride.

You and I attended the same party last Saturday. I was the sexy, divine, devil that won second place. Wish we would have known as I would loved to have talked to you. Maybe next year or the next party Rori sponsors.

Wow. Dress shopping heaven! And your wife is "forcing" you to do it. You have to surrender to it don't you?

Poor girl! ..^..

What seems like the right thing to do could also be the hardest thing you have ever done in your life.

So the party went about as well as could be expected. Not surprisingly, the others in the "wedding party" were dressed "ugly" on purpose... so naturally my extra few steps of effort were VERY noticeable (more makeup than a quick smack of ill-applied lipstick, proper heels instead of sneakers, smooth legs and arms vs. covered in fur, painted toenails, etc.) Luckily my wife and I both agreed to a story ahead of time (she wanted me to "win" the costume contest plus give me a view into why it takes her so long to get ready...) so overall, things are OK. And I guess my wife did a good enough job because quite a few people had NO idea who I was (and several folks commented, before they knew it was me, "Hey who's the hot amazon chick?" LOL!) Lots of ribbing and jabs from my guy friends (expected) and lots of "wow's", compliments, and "You really pull this off!" from their wives (not expected!)

After seeing a few photos from the party, I now know - NEVER wear heels in public outside of either (a) a TG/CD specific event or (b) as some sort of "gag" (like Halloween). Way way WAAAAY too tall. Flats from now on otherwise. Kinda bummed, feeling those strappy heels on my feet adds so much to the experience! But I'll ditch some of the experience to spare myself from being so noticeable.

Outside of the Halloween party, had some fun doing a little extra shopping. It seems time has worked its magic a little on my wife (spending some extended time with Laura these last few weeks, where she sees it's still "me" there helps I imagine)... we spent a lot of time talking about makeup, what works, how to apply it, etc. Picked up a little eyeshadow kit (I think it's intended for younger girls cuz it's got these little "how to" cards with step-by-step instructions in it) that is pretty cool. Picked up a new skirt with this great black and white houndstooth pattern on it at JC Penney's (anybody notice that store has really transformed itself into a pretty "hip" place lately?) and a couple new shirts at ROSS. Wife found this pretty spectacular sweater dress at Ann Taylor on sale which looks pretty good on me too! I also learned how to "tune" my Veronica a little. The hips it gives me definitely make me look curvy (vs. not curvy at all without it!) but something still hasn't looked "right." Wife makes fun of my "badonkadonk" with them but I'm too self-conscious without hips! Well we figured out that if I wear a sort of high waist/thigh slimmer over the Veronica, it still leaves me with curves but shrinks me down a little. Big difference and I really like the results. Might be worth calling Espy to see if she can sell me new, smaller pads, so I don't have a million layers of hardware on underneath everything!

I took some crummy cell phone photos of some of the outfits, I'll post them up in a bit. Since we can only post 2 a week I have to be selective about which ones I post! :) I thought about creating a separate Photobucket account or something but I'm still a little concerned about privacy and I know a lot of those photo sites are taggable and searchable. With the Halloween party this past weekend, photos of me are going to be out there in the public space. I'd rather have them NOT get criss-crossed with other photos of me. I don't want someone tagging the Halloween photos with my real name, then have some built in auto-tagging face recognition feature go through other photos in other accounts and auto-tag my other photos! I can explain the Halloween photos... I can't explain any others of me wearing anything other than what I wore on Halloween!

I also think that throughout the weekend, I may have discovered at least a partial reason behind the "why" of it all. Primarily, I find it fun... but why is it fun? It almost starts to feel like a form of art, or a creative outlet, for me. Picking out the outfits is fun, putting them on and seeing if they "work" is fun and satisfying. Trying out the makeup is fun, and seeing what works and what doesn't. Going "out" is cool and all but each time I've gone out, it hasn't been the "WOW!" experience I expected it to be. It blurs by when I'm out and then when I get home, it's kinda like, "That's it?" Both events of these last two weeks, I've had 10x as much fun deciding what to wear, trying on different combinations of everything (heels, no heels, which dress, which bra works best under it, which undergarments, corset or no corset, etc.) as I did actually going out. The actual "going out" almost felt like a let-down compared to the fun involved in getting ready! In a weird way, it's a relief (as I don't quite feel the pressure on myself to "go out and about") but also kind of frustrating as I know I look passable (attractive, even) but almost seems like I'm wasting it by not going out. *shrug* Maybe I should just save this part of this post for a fresh topic/post of its own...

OH! Forgot to mention this.

One of the coolest things - breast forms. I've been using the "Pals" ones for years. Soft, heavy... but could never really get them to sit in the bra right. Their flat back seemed to kinda be part of the problem (I'm not super heavy but do seem to have a little bit of natural breast tissue). It also bugged me that it seemed there was no way to "attach" them - none of the usual glues or tapes seemed to work. Some recent searching turned up some stuff called Aleene's "Tack-It" glue which supposedly works on the Pals. I tried it ($2.99 at a local crafts store vs. $10+ at online CD specialty stores - what a ripoff!) and it seemed to work ok but the flat backs still kept pulling away and I felt like I was going to lose them.

While out dress shopping, we stopped by Rori's (local CD specialty store) and got talked into picking up a pair of silicone forms (turns out they are the "Transform Superperk" ones). They've got a concave back which fit a lot better. Also picked up a few of the tapes they use to adhere... and WOW... pretty amazing. Going braless is quite the feeling! Wore them without a bra for a few hours on Saturday and it was incredible! Though the stickers don't last very long - I wound up leaving the old stickers on and coating them in the Tack-It (I'm paranoid about putting the Tack-It on the forms themselves in case it ruins them somehow) and the stuff is awesome. Nice comfy, semi-snug cami looked so real! Even my wife commented that they looked and felt pretty damn real!

Cool stuff :)

Laura,
Congrats on winning! :)

About that height problem. I recommend finding taller friends :) When I am wearing my more fun heels, I'm at least 6' 3" and I don't get stares or any hassles, nothing. I'm just a tall woman. Once I was with Jamie J in an Off Broadway shoe store and 4 basketball or volleyball girls were shopping for the tallest heels they could find. If they want nice high heels and they aren't afraid to wear them, why should we be afraid.

Now about that Photobucket, Flickr, etc. So what if they are searchable and taggable.... If you don't have identifying info about you, then who's gonna find you? Are you going to be the only picture for the tag... the search... the whatever? I don't think so. Try this simply search... Search on "Davita" and see how many sites it takes before you come across mine. I think you will give up before you get there. I specifically am not hiding, but people have to know more than my first name to find me. If people are looking, they will need to have a fair amount of info to find you as well.

Sssooooo... looking forward to seeing you posted somewhere :)

Again, congrats on a job well done.

Laura,

Thanks for the interesting reports. My impression, from looking at your earlier photos is that you've gone up a level in your passability after two years off, which is kind of interesting (if true). I agree that it's really nice how engaged your wife has been - I mean that sounds one of the best bits.

With the thing about posting photos on other sites, it seems like a balance of probabilities thing. Sure it's always possible that technically able people would do that kind of stuff - but why would they do it? Like unless someone has a particular axe to grind against you and is prepared to put in the time and effort (apart from being technically able) there's not a realistic threat.

I really like having hips too - like it absolutely affects how much I'm "in" the woman - and I have a particular shape I seem to go for. I am a corselette fiend - wearing one of those naturally smooths out the stuff underneath. I have read that that is a classic way of creating a "unlumpy" shape - to wear a body shaper on top of the basic underwear.

Thanks Davita :)

I'm 6' 1-1/2" already, without help from heels. The heels I wore to the party are these really great strappy numbers - but with the heel and platform they're 4 inches! I have big feet and can't seem to find heels that aren't platforms and/or "stripper shoes".

I still need to post up some new pics... I'll get to it, I promise. Work very busy today!
