A new adventure

Post by Paula G »

I've not been here very much for the last couple of months, lots going on, some of which may end up in another section, however I have had a first today that is leading up to an even bigger first next month. This evening I had my first rehearsal with the LGSO and next month I will be playing with them at their next concert, it is a long standing ambition for Paula to play in a concert, at last it looks like I will be able to combine these two passions. Now I just hope that they have a dress code that allows one of the LBDs to come out, I'm not sure I can afford a new evening gown this soon after Christmas. I have another few rehearsals to go before the concert on the 17th Feb, it will be a test of my wardrobe to manage a different casual outfit for each rehearsal as most of my clothes are formal or at least not quite casual. Tonight I wore a tunic and leggings, I couldn't help noticing I was the only girl not in jeans!

Wow, Paula, that is such a big deal! How did you get the word out that your girl self was waiting in the wings, ready to audition? These will be exciting times for you!

I have been pinning for an opportunity for Paula to play in public for ages, in the end I realised that an opportunity wouldn't just land in my lap so a while back I contacted the LGSO through their website, I was honest about who and what I am, at that point they had no opening for a tuba player, fortunately for me they do now need a bass trombone. I also wanted to see if they meant what they said when say they serve the London LDBT community, it seems that they do mean it!

I think I have hit lucky here on so many levels, I love Shostakovich and Borodin (well most Russian music actually) it seems like a pretty good orchestra, and playing trombone I can keep my knees together so don't have to buy a new (long and full) skirt or dress. It would be such a shame if I had to wear trousers for this event. However I have found that lipstick doesn't work when playing!

Looking at the web site, I don't think wearing your LBD will be a problem. Maybe a little understated :P

The concert is this coming Sunday evening, I always get a little nervous about performing, on this occasion I have an added area of concern, but I am really looking forward to the experience. At the rehearsals all the other members have been very accepting, and after the last one took me off to the pub and I was bought drinks for the rest of the night, now that is a very nice welcome!

I have settled on my outfit for the night and pretty confident of the music, so now it is just a question of going and doing it, I can't wait1

I'm sure you don't want to disappoint the rest of the orchestra by not doing it, nor yourself!?

The concert was today, and all in all it went very well, we had a good audience who enjoyed some very good playing. When I got to the venue (an old London Parish Church) I found it was rather colder inside than I had anticipated so had to wear a stole I had brought with me, throughout the concert, other than that everything (apart from teh trains) went very well, I have just posted a photo here http://paula-paulasplace.blogspot.co.uk ... id-it.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

One thing is fr sure, now I have started I will be doing more, the only trouble, I will now need to get some more black dresses.
