I've been growing my nails off and on for about ten years, ever since I first started dressing in public. Except for a primer given to me by a female friend then, I have always done everything myself. One morning after work, I needed to do some shopping at Super Walmart, so I broke down and treated myself to a basic manicure at the little salon in the front of the store. (I know, you're thinking I must be the poorest little low-rent trannie in the world, going to Walmart, and you're probably right!
NOTE to self: Never do this after work again! It was wonderful, but I almost fell asleep in the chair. I also committed the awful faux pas of forgetting to tip the technician.
I mention this now because it's been a couple of weeks, and the finish on the nails is starting to look a little ragged, so I'm thinking of going back this weekend for another. I'm also thinking of going to see them later this year for my big "coming out".
If you haven't ever done this before, do it! I always thought of pro nailcare as being too femme to mesh with my public masculine persona, but no one's said one negative thing about it, and I've received no end of compliments about it. In fact, most of my female friends and coworkers Have told me I should go back and get a pedicure as well, saying it's a little bit like heaven.
