Trip to the dentist

Post by Debbie Jean »

Yesterday I went to the dentist for my 6-month checkup/cleaning. I usually have Sharon for the dental assistant who picks at my teeth. She knows me on a 1st name basis and knows that I'm CD and is totally OK with it. Well Sharon was out sick, so I got Monica instead.

I'd never had Monica before, so I decided to crack a couple Monica Lewinsky jokes just to "break the ice". That went well and pretty much set the tone for the rest of that visit.

When she started working on me, she bent over and laid her forearm diagonally across my chest. She said: "Oh, I see you're wearing a bra". She wanted to know what brand it was. I told her it was Maidenform. I said; "You know their slogan--We make mountains out of mole hills or vice-versa. Not really." We both had a good laugh off that one. She wanted to know how much of that was padding and how much was actually me. We had casual "girl talk" for the next several minutes. Nothing dirty or inappropriate, just good clean innocent fun. All-in-all, a very enjoyable dental visit.

Now some of you may say her conduct was "unprofessional". I would have to agree. However I must ask: What fun would life be if everybody acted "professional" all the time?

XOXO,
Deb

"Unprofessional"? Oh pooh to it. Life would be way too boring that way. I love my dentist in Raleigh Dr Lloyd and her assistant Robin are super nice. They made getting dentures 95% painless and fun I even looked forward to visits. I used to wear foundation and do my brows and a touch of mascara for visits.

Once during a visit Dr Lloyd wiped my cheek and commented that she had wiped some foundation off. Robin said maybe I would like a mirror to fix my makeup? I said I didn't have any with me. ( I was getting embarrassed by now ) Dr Lloyd looked at me with a puzzled look and said Oh honey every woman carries a basic makep kit in her bag I have powder, lipstick that's all I need for quick repairs, Robin nodded in agreement and said you'll need to start carrying some, we have to look nice. I said thanks ladies I'll do that.

They obviously knew what with my hairstyle and makeup I was, in their eyes, either a CD or transitioning but their whole handling of the experience was very nice and friendly towards me, I'll take unprofessional over stuffy professional by-the-book any day.
One wears a mask for so long you forget who you are beneath it......I've now removed my mask.
