I suppose another way to look at it is if they wanted to use guns then they need to be prepared for the consequences. If they were about to force someone into a car at gunpoint then they needed to be stopped by whatever means neccesary. Once they were stopped it was time to do the next right thing.
Sounds like the police agreed.
