How do you react when CDs are on TV?
How do you react when CDs are on TV, and your SO is in the room? For me I know that my SO finds CDs gross. So I just try to turn the channel or talk about something else. As you may know, she knows that I used to dress, but thinks I am cured (I don't believe CDing can be cured). Needless to say, it is a very uncomfortable situation. I especially feel uncomfortable when CDs are portrayed as loose or sex fiends. In my mind it just makes matters worse. Wouldn't it be nice if CDs were viewed by society and the media as wholesome persons who contribute to our society?
Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with this? Have your tried it, and did it work for you?
Nuff Luv,
Erica Shade

Erica You are in a tough situation. I believe you are headed for trouble if you are unable to dress. it will affect your health, and may even be the cause of depression later in your live.
Your wife needs to educate herself about this stuff, and I hope you can help her see the importance of that.
The Jung link that Deborah keeps providing is probably as good a place as any to start.
Wishing you all the best.

Excellent topic!
I'm always intereted and curious to watch - today the first thing I look for is how she presents herself or how she is portrayed.
I remember growing up seeing my mother's reaction to a TG people on television. She always seemed to express a positive interest - she worked as a nurse and used to tell me stories of one of her patients who happened to be a CD.
Then there was the time about 15 years ago, some talk show was doing a topic on a transsexual who thought tht she was pregnant. My mother actually called me away from what I was doing to watch it. At that time I was like "She called me over to the TV set for this?"
Ironic... the moment she discovered her son was a CD, it became a total TABOO topic for her.
As for friends, they'll immediately call me over to the TV. "Hey Lorna/Rick! Come check this out! What do you think?"

Hi Erica,
Lorna's right. Excellent topic.
It was weird for me. When I wasn't super dressing or shaving my legs or anything it felt akward because my wife knew about my dressing, but neither she or I knew how much I was going to develop in the next couple of years.
Anyway, when we would watch I'd feel my stomach knotting up and want to change the channel and she'd feel uncomfy too. So we just avoided it.
Now I'm out to her and she's helping me with my progression into my CD'd/TG'd world.
We tend to gravitate towards Gender issue shows now.
It wasn't overnight, but it did happen.
The cure is a tough one. It's the chemotherapy of relationships because you have to almost kill your body to kill the cancer known as a secret. If you don't go through relationship chemo' then cancer will most likely eat you up from the inside.
Best of luck with your decision.

Hey Lorna,
I didn't want to ruin my response to Erica, so I started this post.
That is VERY interesting that your mom was fascinated by this enough to call you into another room to take a look and now that it's her child she feels differently.
Your mom is going to be ok with this, you'll see.
She's not even going to need a whole year probably, but she is going to need a little time.
I'm proud of you!!!

Thaks, Beauty!
I know that I p*** and moan about the old battleaxe a LOT, and that I tend to give little regard to my family's opinions, but deep down inside, there is a small part of me that wants her to be okay with it.
As much as the old woman can be very stubborn and drives me NUTS sometimes, I still have to look out for her. Ever since that time she cleaned out my apartment, she at least knows now to CALL FIRST before coming over.

Hi Girls,
There have only been a few times when my wife and I were watching TV and CD'ing came on. I don't say anything, just carefully watch her reaction and if she says something then I will respond otherwise it's a mute issue. We did at one time watch the story of the TG's (former B-52 pilot and the other girl living in SF). My main comment to her was that - that (SRS) is the fartherest thing from my mind! She did feel comfortable with that!
Love,
Deborah

Hi all,
The only person I have to "work on," so to speak, is my father. As my SOs were always in the know, and supportive to a greater or lesser extent, it was almost always a matter of course that we'd make it a point to watch television shows that focused on gender issues. Same with books; after I finsished reading such books, I'd pass them on to my GFs, who usually read them with an interest that developed out of their own personal stakes in our relationship. My father, on the other hand, is almost allergic to the subject. My technique is this: if I know that such a show is scheduled on TV, I phone his wife (who's more than okay with my being TGed) to let her know about it, so that she may, at the very least, try to finagle him into watching it. It goes without saying that, if I happen to be at my dad's, watching such shows is out of the question--he's just too uncomfortable with the subject.
Now, if seeing a TV or TS on a television show while I'm at my dad's is a happenstance thing, then, of course, silence falls over the room. I used to say something but would never get any comments or replies in return, so I just gave up. Anyway, my dad suffers from acute chronic zapperitis, so it's never possible to watch more than a few seconds of any given show (unless, that is, it's a boxing match--and his love of boxing is a bit of a thorn between us, I guess).
Anyway, Erica, interesting topic. Thanks for bringing it up. On a side note, you're right, of course, it's not the transgender condition that needs to be cured but, rather, people's attitudes about it. Whittling away at a round peg just to make it fit into a square hole will merely ensure that the peg falls right through the hole.
Love,
CJ

I watch and make mental notes about what she's doing right and wrong.
Usually, she is portrayed to look ridiculous. That gets me angry!
Sometimes, if it's too bad (a la Jerry Springer), I'll change the channels.
And then again, usually, with the best makeup people in the world, if they don't make her look silly, they make her look great!

laugh when it is funny
I find that seeing a CD in a movie (Shrek) or on TV is uncomfortable especially when the wife doesn't approve. Mine doesn't. My kids still poke fun at penoakeo
(bad spelling) and I just joke right along. My wife tried to power play the situation to intimidate me but I feel it was difused by my joining in with the laughter. After all it was funny. The Barmaid.. Well she needed a shave.
I think over all like so many other groups CD and variants get a bum rap on TV and the movies because the sensational stuff generates ratings. Even the so called documentaries are rather biased too. Bias??? Sounds familiar.
Anyway try to have fun with it and laugh if it is funny, cry if it sad, show empathy for the charactor on the screen if appropriate.

There was really only one TV program that my wife sat through with me, a taped one, The Secret Wardrobe.
This was almost 2 years ago and I thought it portrayed a fair spectrum of crossdressers in an evenhanded way. This helped her accept Jadeanne. I only dress around home, and I think the show made her feel better that I just like to dress and don't want to transition, seek out males, etc.
Forwarding to today, I regularly tape The Brini Maxwell Show on style network but view it by myself. I enjoy the mild humor and great retro outfits.
If I were attending a costume party as a female character, my first choice would be Brini because I know I would enjoy dressing in a late 50's/early 60's outfit and acting a little silly.

Thanks Erica,
Australian Idol saw a young man fail in the first try out , the young man came back TG as blond bombshell " Courtney Act " .
She went on to finish in the top 10 and blew our minds , she is well respected by even by normally narrow minded morons .
In a recent poll men in this country were asked " would you go to bed with miriam ( theres something about Miriam )? , the respose was ::::
" Miriams not our type but Courtney Act is a different matter "
Courtney Act is a Hetro gender Illusionist and has been greatly accepted in this country.

Hi all,
Merinda,
Courtney Act is a looker, all right!

Barbara,
I tend to react differently, depending on whether or not the depiction of CDs is accurate or not. I tend to tune out the farces. I've seen portrayals of transgenderism on dramas (and, yes, comedies, too) that are much more faithful to who we are (or, to who I am, at least) than I have on Jerry Springer-like talk shows.
Love,
CJ
