Possible ordinance on gender discrimination

I'm not sure this post strictly belongs here in the coping forum or elsewhere, so moderators, feel free to move it if you like.

I'm not a big fan of more laws, and more governmental control in our lives. That said, I'm more tolerant of local ordinances, because if crafted well, and they serve the public interest well (yeah, about as un-common as a beneficial mutation, but I digress), then the ordinance can be adopted by other jurisdictions.

The Lawrence Journal World (a city that happens to be in the same half of the state that I live in) has published a story about a proposed city ordinance which allegedly would protect gender expression from discrimination in areas of housing, employment, public accommodation, etc. On one hand, the city has a dearth of employment opportunities already, so if the remaining employers flee the city, that could be bad. Still, it seems to me like the time for something like this may have finally come.
