What did get myself into?
About a year ago I got a letter from what turned to be my half sister. She is my mother`s daughter and ended up in the foster care system and adopted and while she loves her parents she wanted to find her birth mother. Not getting into that story but her opinion of our natural mother is no better than mine. Remember I was raised by my grandparents. We talked a few times on the phone at first then ended up meeting and we hit it off. Well a few months ago I told her of Melissa and of course she was full of questions. Amber called me over the weekend and wants to get together next weekend, she lives about an hour from me, but she wants to meet her `sister`.
Yes I go out and have even come out to a few friends as well as a couple of people at work so I am not in the closet and have long gotten over the shame and embarrassment of who I am. Silll I am nervous about meeting my sister. Should I go through with it? How should I act? What should I wear? I love having a liitte sister but deep inside I am afraid of losing that if Amber doesn`t like Melissa. Am I being silly or should I be concerned?

Melissa,
Just go and meet her and be your " Melissa " self. Act naturally as you would as Melissa, don't put on a false face, be yourself, and relax. It will be 2 women meeting for coffee or lunch and maybe a little shopping so enjoy.
As for what to wear, wear whatever you would wear at any time you were out as Melissa. You sister might compliment you on your outfit and how good you look as a woman, or she may have a different fashion sense than you, but it really doesn't matter as long as you are comfortable in what you are wearing.
Go forth and have fun.

I agree.

Char and Donna are correct (as they usually are). You have nothing to loose and everyhting to gain and besides if you backed out now it would be worse. And wear what you would going out to a casual lunch with any of your girlfriends. And to repeat my two esteemed friends, just be Melissa. Have fun and be strong.

You are the one who knows her and what she is like. It has to be based on how you feel about physically sharing that part of you with her. She has asked to meet Melissa so there must be a reason for that, it's up to you to figure out what that reason is and if it is in your best interest to meet her as Melissa.

Some good advice here Melissa. Just be yourself and go with the flow! Hopefully your sister will be accepting of Melissa as her sister, its not like you are going to change your life now. As for what to wear Olivia's suggestion of wear what you would if you were going to lunch with a girl friend. Whatever you do don't change your style just for this, be comfortable with your clothes and yourself.
Remember Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did only she did it backwards and in high heels!

You were able to come out comfortably to others so is there something that is making your nervous this time?
The common theme I see in all the very supportive replies Melissa is to be yourself and follow your feelings.

As someone totally locked in the closet, I am in no position to provide any insight, rather express my great admiration for what you have achieved thus far. My hope, is that all goes well for you!

This is old...But I agree...put on your best...appropriate outfit, do your make up and jewelry, fix your hair and just be yourself. It is the unashamed confidence to just be who you are and it should be fine.

This is one topic that I read before registering, it really made me wonder how things went?
You don't have to say anything about it, of course, but I just hope things went well for you.

Re: What did get myself into?
Sorry girls I should have posted a follow up on this a while ago but you know how flighty us wannabe blondes can be.
Melissa's meeting with Amber, my half sister, went great. She came over to my place where we had lunch and talked. I went with a maxidress for our first meeting and she loved it. I think I surprised her how feminine I was, years of practice, and how I seemed more comfortable as her sister than her brother. Of course she was full of questions including the most obvious. Yes for the record Melissa is "straight" ,she loves a good man.
Melissa has gotten together with Amber twice since the first meeting, the most recent this past weekend at her place. When she asked me over she told me I could change at her place and seemed a little surprised when I told her that was not an issue. I have been out for a few years now and don't hesitate to go anywhere as Melissa. I am still not sure where the sisterly relationship is going but I do have to admit having a little sister is fun!

Yes, thanks for the update!
That is so good to hear, I am so glad to hear that it seems to be going well!
It would be great if, not only you are able to connect with her, but connect with her as yourself, to be accepted as who you are.
Being able to be yourself is essential.
To be accepted as who you are, is equally important.
And family is really, really important, I know that all too well.
Good luck, we'll be rooting for you!
