Another make up thread

Post by Louise »

I'm ready to buy my first make up. I've had a go of my mums stuff when she was on holiday and loved it even if I did it all wrong.

What things should I be buying?

I guess I can chime in here to help. I love makeup :)

Basic stuff is foundation, blush, lipstick, eyeshadow, mascara.
More detailed stuff is like, eyeliner and false eyelashes.

Start where you want buying things you like the colors of. Look online for makeup turtorials and how to do your own color evaluation. These will not only help you to apply correctly but will help you decide which colors look best on you. You'll hear women refer to themselfs as a winter or fall or something like that. This is like a catagory and helps you decide what colors look best on you. For instance Courtney Cox would be a Winter, Julia Roberts more of a Fall/Autumn. Get it?

NO matter what colors you select at first you may be disappointed by your first few attempts but take heart, all girls go through this. I suggest investing in a decent set of make up brushes to get you started. These are used mostly for eyeshadow, where it is most important to know how to blend. Just ignore thoes little sponge applicators that come with the shadows untill you first learn with brushes. Thoes sponge applicators will have you lookin like a freshman hussie who's face fell into a make up kit on the way to school. LOL.
Honestly wait on thoes till you get a bit more experience. As with anything practice makes perfect. Consider yourself lucky, the internet wasen't around when I was learning to do makeup so you'll be able to learn lots very quickly.

Stick to the cheap brands at first till you start developing likes and dislikes and know how to choose a foundation that's right for you. That will save you money. My favorite cheap drug store brands are Cover Girl and Rimmell. Both are available at the local wal mart or you can buy discreetly online. ULTA is an awesome store if you have one locally then you are very lucky.
My favorite Mascara right now is Lash Stiletto by Maybelienne....its's Fing awesome!!!

I hope this was helpful to you, post any other make up question you may have, this was fun!! Good luck ;)

That's brilliant MissTara 8)

I'll maybe try and be brave enough to go and buy stuff in a shop. Most likely I'll use ebay though

Thanks xx

Check out www.ulta.com

Free shipping over $50, free samples with every order, 3 that you get to choose i think. Also always lots of sales and a rewards point system if I remember correctly. :) They will carry everything you need from the cheap drug store brands to the expensive ones. Also full lines of perfumes and lotions! They also carry a whole line of thier own nice reasonably priced stuff.

Buying makeup may be one of the least stressful CD things to do in male mode. Regardless, there are positive benefits to buying makeup in person. You inspect color and construction (brushes, etc) directly. Purchases can be in small quantity without getting murdered on shipping. And when you find something you like (or dislike) you can get (or avoid) the exact product next time. An ebay purchase might not be repeatable.

Don't buy the cheapest lipstick - it tastes terrible.

Another thing I should think of is some sort of light fake tan, any recommendations to something that can be easily had in the UK?

To add to Tara's post, there are different types of brushes to aid in makeup application.

These can be expensive, but you should be able to find a basic set in Ulta, Sephora or Wal-mart to practice with.

Note that is important to check out at least the foundation in person, to match your skin type.

I'd suggest getting some advice from a cosmetics counter at Macy's, MAC, or the like. Scairey, maybe, but doable.

Well, I did it. Very subtely added in in with the weekly shopping.

I only got concealer and foundation, both Rimmel. The colour doesn't show up too much on me so I'm guessing I've done it right :D

Good for you girl, sounds like you have made your first steps successfully. Don't try to rush things, its taken me over a year where I can now go out in public without anyone realising I am not what I seem. The secret is practice, practice and more practice..

Best wishes.
