As an old person who doesn't have such great eyesight any more I have difficulty reading the small type on this site. Is it just that the platform you run on that limits type size?

Hi, Vieja -
The forum's font size is defaulted to 'normal' which equates to 10-pt. Although the size can be adjusted in each member's post, we prefer posts made in the default size. Not only is this size generally easier for most people to read, it also keeps the forum uniform in text size and maintains our classy image.
As Wendae said, you can adjust the browser on your pc to magnify your web pages (generally found in the Accessibility options).
Under other circumstances, I would have automatically edited Wendae's post by removing the larger font and returning it to the 'normal' size; however, I am aware that she did it to make a point regarding magnification in your browser, and so it will remain.
Have a wonderful day!
