Who Else Likes Petticoats?

Post by Jadeanne »

I'm in my early 50s and still remember girls and women wearing petticoats. That style didn't totally disappear from where I lived until the late 60s.

I wondered how wearing a petticoat would feel and now I know - it's great :) !

I now have a Malco Modes style 580 white petticoat size medium - 22 inches long. the url with a picture is http://www.malcomodes.biz/square.pc2.html
it's the first one on the page.

This is a soft petticoat (nylon "chiffon", no netting). According to the website it has just a bit of fullness. The hem has 3 inches of lace trim.

I chose that one because I thought it would work well with my own and my wife's wardrobes (I can fit into all her clothes except shoes and she is willing to share). So far I have found 15 dresses that work with it, and still have another 10 or so to try.

The outfits I wear using the petticoat I call "late 50's early 60s adult everyday church lady/housewife". The majority have the hemline just above my knees. I complete the outfits with gartered stockings (not vintage, new Hanes Silk Reflections sandalfoot or National RHT), OBG, LLB.

So far, the petticoat is one of my most expensive purchases (around $45) but I think it was a good one that I will wear often.

I'm wearing it right now under a black print Jessica Howard dress. I can just look down and admire the lace peeking out of the hem.

Who else on this forum has and wears petticoats at least once in a while?

I have two petticoats. One I bought when I bought a maids unifrom that is really full and little pricy but the person game me a deal for buying the full set. The other is older one that I needed the elastic tightened. I gave to my mom who had a friend who works with elastic and fixed up so work now. I got that at second hand shop for like 2 dollors as it one of there half off days. I am now looking for dresses (I prefer full dress that at least go to the knee) to use with them.

Here's an update after searching through another closet - 3 more dresses and 4 jumpers work with my petticoat, so I have pretty good variety!

All of the skirts my wife and I have are too straight, but she has a good sewing machine and she's slowly teaching me to use it, too. She said that simple skirts are some of the easiest things to sew and finding the right pattern shouldn't be too hard.

Joanna and Jessie,

Thank you for sharing your petticoat experiences. I don't go out dressed but your postings gave some ideas for the future.

Hi Jadeanne,

What is it about the petticoat that specifically attracts you to it? :)

I tried one on when I went to my photo shoot. It felt so girly wearing it, but it was hard to move around or function. ;)

You have gotten me to think about getting one again. :)

Beauty, I think the whole idea of the petticoat was to make it harder to move around orginally many years ago. Also it was a way to keep male admirers at a strict distance as puffs out. now and days I think! it's used more for a look. I am not sure how it got into the square dancing as I am not the familar with it other than doing it a couple of times many years ago.

Beauty,

In answer to your question,

I think the petticoat is one of the most feminine garments and a link to the past. Now that I have one,it really does feel girly.

I really liked the look of 50s and 60s ladies in petticoats (I was born in 1951 so I do have some memories of them). This is a look I try to emulate a bit once in a while. I love the volume of the pouffed-out skirt.

I tempered fantasy with reality in choosing the 22 inch length and modest fullness. As I noted in previous posts, this combination of length and fullness works with over 20 dresses/jumpers I already have or have permission to borrow anytime (thanks to my loving, supportive wife).

Hi everyone,

I'm refreshing this thread beacuse since the last previous post, a lot of new members have joined and there has been discussion on other threads about maid uniforms and petticoats.

How many of you have and wear petticoats?

Well I have said before, I believe, I have two. One I bought specifically for the maid uniform. Another I found at a second hand store that need the elastic repaired, something my mom was able to do for me. When I had my brother over I showed him, this is the brother I have mentioned in other posts, my clothes. He really liked the petticoat that goes with the maid uniform because how big it is.

I have a longer one, the wedding dress variety, good for longer dresses & skirts in white (JC Penney outlet) and a shorter black one (a bit softer) that I had to adjust the elastic on I got at a 2nd hand store.

I like how they puff out a dress or skirt to look fuller - flaired hemlines are quite feminine.

I still have my one white petticoat and I'm wearing it now with a black dress (knee length). I can just glance down and enjoy the lace peeking out from the hem.

I love the way it poufs out the dress, and now I'm also wearing my new corset and experimenting with hip and rear end padding (without it, the corset is too loose in those areas).

I certainly feel great wearing this outfit.

How often do you other girls wear your petticoats?

Not that often as I would like. The problem I have is that puffs out so and my apartment is not that big that seam not knocking things over if I have not to carefull.

Jessie,

I can understand your space problem. My house is a small one with lots of things in it, so I went with the knee length, less full one.

Sometimes I have a fantasy of being dressed up as an antebellum Scarlett O'Hara bride. but reality steps in, and I don't think I would fit through most of the doors and using my small bathroom would be "mission impossible". It's enough of an adventure with the knee length dress/petticoat/corset I have on now.

But we can dream, can't we?

Can I ask, where you got your knee length peticoat. I am also looking for one that goes even further down if they exist.

For me I guess because that was all the thing in high school. Girls had at lease two on at once. I just love the sound as I walk along and the trick of setting down in one. My wife saids they are to old fashion, true but I wear one when I feel like a young girl again. Carol Ann
