I put on my denim shorts with the flowery trim at the hem and my gingham blue and white sleevless top over my panties and crop-top bra and went out for the first time locally.
I wore my flats and plum color lipstick. No wig, no hose (it's hot AND humid here today). I didn't pass as female in any sense of the word.
First, I went to a nearby Country and Western store and bought a new belt with silver buckle and tip to wear mostly with my denim short skirts: dark blue, light blue, white, and RED RED RED. The three sales ladies made quite a fuss over me and I felt very welcome. They helped find the style and size
I wanted. I'll definitely go back there again. Money talks...
Second, I went to the nearby cosmetology school and had my eyebrows waxed and shaped in a nice feminine style with as high an arch as we could achieve
with the little brow hair I have.
It was done in a big open room with 20 or so techs and several female customers. None said much, but I got a lot of looks. Didn't phase me a bit. I knew what I wanted and was confident about who I was and how I was dressed.
Heather, the girl who waxed and shaped my eye brows, said to call any time to schedule appointments for other things like nails... Again, money talks.
Very positive experiences!!
I guess the fact that I was 70 Monday and retired for 5 years made going out easier. If I still had kids at home and was still working, it would have been much more difficult. For those of you in a situation comparable to mine but who haven't ventured out, try it, you'll like it. Just be sure to bring money and be confident about who you are and what you want.
First time out and about locally Tuesday

Barbara,
You go girl!
It's great to hear about another southern lady getting out and about. I run errands and go shopping around town, but I have not tried the salon route yet. Guess I'm still a little nervous about wigging (pardon the pun) out the clientele. After hearing your story, I may just have to go for it.
Take Care,
Angie
Hi Barbara--
It is nice not to have to worry about family members being embarrassed, or explaining to people at work. I take it you've been out in other locations, but had not just walked out the door in your own town. It sounds like it went well. Confidence speaks loudly.
Yes, I have been out and about before.
Back in 1994, I was out of the closet, but it was under special circumstances.
I had been downsized out of a job in Dallas, TX, and my wife had to stay behind to babysit the repair and sale of the house there. I lived alone in SC
for about 11 months. During that time, I attended the 1994 Texas T-party in San Antonio. It was a Wednesday through Sunday "convention: at which I was enfemme 24/7 for the duration. We made shopping trips, and a day visiting the Missions, including a couple hours at the Alamo. I had more stuff than
I came with, so I had to go to the mall to get more luggage. I wore my tan suede blazer nd skirt with 3" heels and accomplished the mission.
Later in the year, I attended several weekend meetings of the Atlanta Tri-Ess chapter and participated in their nornal adventures out and about at that time.
My wife knows about my CD desires and I openly store a rather large femme wardrobe in the house in SC, and I sometimes dress in the house and for bed.
The thing that made these outings easy was that all of them were at remote locations where the likelyhood of meeting and being recognized by someone who knew me was infinitesimal. Not so in and around my (now) home town.
So, for 11 months, I was out and about, but that was 12 years ago...
