Obesity is a very complex thing, just like gender identity.
I'm currently 310 pounds, and I absolutely hate it. My dear SO was recently diagnosed Type II Diabetic. No surprise there. I'm doing all the same wrong things that she did, and that she mostly still does. It's only a matter of time.
Seven years ago I had a good paying job, and went on prescription drugs to lose weight. Being 6' tall, I looked so good at 186 pounds. Now I have literally hundreds of skirts and dresses that are way too small, and almost nothing still fits.
Eating healthy means eating as though food costs are not an issue. Being unemployed now for 55 weeks, cost is inevitably invariably an issue. Soon, the cost of obesity will also become an issue. My knees already hurt. Sleep apnea may be the next plague.
Diet and exercise work, but when your feet hurt, exercise is not just "get up and do it". When food is one of your few pleasures, and you know intellectually that a single large meal is no more deadly than a single cigarette, food really is an insidious addiction just like smoking, and effective treatment for our addiction is simply beyond our means.
Laproscopic band surgery? That's pretty extreme! Do I think about it? Yes, almost every day.
Hugs,
Bernice

I'm type II diabetic, and that was before I went over 200 lbs. I've two brothers way heavier that me, but no diabetes. Another brother just diagnosed, but weighing less than 180 lbs. FIL weighs 150 lbs, and was recently diagnosed, in his 70's. I believe you if you are predisposed to be diabetic, weight pushes you over the edge. Weight alone won't cause diabetes.
Neighbor had it done, and lost a lot of weigh, but now she's in poor health because of it.
SIL had it done, and lost a bit of weight, and even became a vegetarian. The weight's back on.
Worst, a cousin had his stomach burst because he couldn't stop eating.
A drastic action, if you ask me.Bernice wrote:Laproscopic band surgery? That's pretty extreme! Do I think about it? Yes, almost every day.

I am unusual in that very few men my age can show ribs when they take a shirt off - I am one such. Its a mixed blessing as I have no spare fat on my chest I can tease into a cleavage. I will just have to work to my other advantages.
I am currently 5' 10" tall and 145lbs (10st 5lbs) and have been this weight for the past 35 years
My son and daughter have inherited my skinny gene my son is 5' 9" and weighs 135lb at 22 and my daughter is 21 and a UK size 8 and both can eat for England.

Women come in all sizes and shapes. I happen to be a curvy woman; I just happen to be convex where I should be concave.
I started out thin-ish and for the million years of dressing, I have put on weight. do I feel less fem? nope. Do I feel sexy? nope. BUT I can still look good and still get compliments for dressing for my shape and age, etc.
I'm ok not being a skinny B**ch....... well ummm I might be happier, but it's not necessary.

Very well said, Helen.
I am overweight by probably thirty pounds. I just thought it a female mind set that I was always fussing about my weight.
Would it not be wonderful if we could shift it to where we would like it. I'll have to buy a bottom just to have one as it is nearly nonexistant now.
And to work weight off without adding muscle mass is a trick by itself.

Yoga, particularly kundalini yoga, is an excellent way to lose weight without bulking up.
I use DVDs by:
Gurmukh, Kundalini Yoga
Gurutej Kaur, Balanced Chakras
Ravi Singh & Ana Brett—I particularly recommend their Fat Free Yoga DVD, which is fun and deservedly popular.
Hatha yoga is a little more muscular, but still worthwhile. My wife and I have benefited by the DVDs of Hemalayaa Behl in particular.
By the way, if you're fearful of yoga (some people are), be assured: all the above DVDs are very gentle, safe, and entirely beneficial in their approach.
I also do elliptical machine "running" at the gym, since my joints will no longer support the jogging I did all my previous life.
Of course the bottom line is, alas, counting calories. (Groan.)
I'm feeling good about the results right now, though. Over 20 pounds lost in about six months. Long way to go, though.
Love, Robyn Katie

Like Susan I'm one of the lucky ones. I've been very pettite all my life. I'm 5'3" 118lb. I've also been told I could use to put on a few pounds.
I find this a huge advantage when buying feminine clothes. I love to shop at thrift stores. If you find something you like you don't have a choice of sizes. Most everything I find I can fit into. I especialy like vintage clothing and for the most part the are sized smaller than clothing for todays women. The bigest problem I have in finding my size is in shoes. Everything I like is to big. I wear a womens size 6 1/2M.
I find myself feeling much more comfortable about my body when im wearing feminine clothes than when I'm wearing masquline clothes.

I am a better man as a woman with a woman, than I could ever be as a man with a woman.

After giving up playing Rugby I was one of the lucky ones who lost weight rather than put it on (I was a uttility front row) since then I had been between 12 stone 7 lb and a little over 13 stone (175 - 182 pounds) at 5 feet 10 inches I think I looked reasonable both in drab and dressed. When I started my gardening business I stayed the same weight, but much of it moved up, i.e. from my waist and bum to chest. However we recently discovered the DEFAULT DIET
Like Jo Ann my wife and daughter recently joined Slimmers World, they are both doing very well but I have also lost around 15 pounds, I havn't been this light since I was 18 (over 30 years ago) and find I rather like it. Only trouble is that some of my fem trousers do not take a belt and are just a little large, I feel I have to keep hoisting them up.JoAnnDallas wrote:I went on the DEFAULT DIET. Never heard of it??, well my wife joined Weight Watchers and to help support her, I ate the same things she did, so by DEFAULT, I was on Weight Watchers too.

At 6' 2" and 185# it's not easy to find clothes that fit right. Pant legs and blouse sleeves are too short, I need a size 16 dress to fit my shoulders but the waist is too big, and inexpensive size 13 heels are not easy to find.
But then, that's half the fun of shopping. Finding that 1 piece that fits right makes it all worth it.

A couple of years ago, I went on the Default Diet and lost about 30 pounds. My wife join weight watchers around the same time, so to support her I ate the same things and portions she did, so by Default I was on weight watchers too. I am now down to 160-155 pounds, 5' 9", and can fit into a size 12/14 dress/skirt. My wife complained that I now way less than she does. LOL
