Why do we want to?

Also part of this mystery is the motive. It tends to differ between the genders. Plus the way men do things, which is not the same as the way women do things.

Guys tend to plunge into a situation looking for ways to manipulate it and capitalize on it. They'd like to create, say, a large permanent object, preferably one that can be seen from space. Or blow one up.

Gals tend to meld into a situation to help build it for mutual satisfaction. They too want to manipulate it, but so as to create a sparkling moment underlain by emotional satisfaction.

In other words, a creche or a park, not the Washington Monument.

There's that old saw: men do a thing for what they can get out of it, women do it for its own sake.

All this is the rankest cliche, of course. Different members of each sex differ greatly. Nevertheless I'm guessing it may hold true often enough to be part of the picture.
