Danielle in response to your first paragraph, my wife, a teacher, spends time every evening deciding what to wear to work the next day. Part of that involves why she will wear whatever it is she chooses to wear. Not too sexy, appropriately stylish but not too much so, and so on. She views it as a monumental chore.

It's easier to play football with a basketball than it is to play basketball with a football. See, so that explains why women can wear mens clothes, with less hassle than men can wear women's clothes
