Oceana Air Show

Post by Jaye »

Tomorrow (Saturday), I'm heading out to NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach for their "50th anniversary" air show. They actually did the first show in 1953, but there were five different years in the interim when they didn't have a show (2001, for one), so this is actually the 50th show. It's supposed to be a big deal, and I put in for the day off so I could go.

I put some serious thought about making this an en femme outing, but I decided that I didn't want to go that deep into a major US military installation in what would be, more or less, a disguise. I'd really like to start reconciling the different facets of my life, but I don't think this is the time or place. Maybe in a couple of years when I look a little different and have ID to match. Besides, the hot, humid environment of the naval station is rough enough on me in drab. It could only get worse in hair and makeup.

Part of the draw for me is the flying, plus all the static displays. I managed to completely fill two 128MB memory cards with the photos from last year's show, and I expect that I'll do more of the same this go around. For those that are interested, I'll post a link to my Photobucket account.

Hi Jaye. This is a marvelous model, though not the real thing like at the airshow you posted about. but thought you might enjoy it.

Hay Carolynn,
That was a great video I LOVED it. Wish I had the money to get into RC (--)

Doesn't take too much to get into RC if you start in a small way. An example: A friend in SE Oklahoma, who is incidentally a world class chef, started with small prebuilt helos for less than 100 bucks, then after he had mastered that, started trading in with a bit for increased size and now flies a helo that is 4 ft long with a 3.5 ft. span on the lifter wing. The first few were electric, but the newest one is gas powered and is very realistic in its actions. The control box went from simple to about as complex as the console in a real bird. When I was there last, he had a large used RC airplane with twin engines too, but hadn't had time to learn to fly it yet, and was thinking of trading to a smaller one to learn. He is still fascinated with 'copters.

So, start small and cheap with things you can play with inside the house without breaking anything to learn the reflexes, then work up.

Me, I always wanted radio controlled boats, but no where to run them around here but lakes with red clay beds. Makes for permanent red stains on a model.

I try to keep my off-topic posts to a minimum. Aviation photography isn't a main focus of this board, so I'll keep this short. It took me a couple of days to organize the photos to my satisfaction, then upload them.

Saturday was a weird one for an airshow. It was cool and cloudy, with a ceiling under 2000 feet. Because of this, a lot of the acts couldn't perform, but it was a neat show anyway. You can see some of the best shots here:

Hey Jaye,

I go to the airshow out here, at Edwards Air Force Base, every two years, dressed "en femme", as that is my only garb now. I used to have pictures posted of me and Raven at one of them. I have never had any trouble or been treated poorly. In fact, it's been no hassle at all.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Jaye
You got some nice stills of various plane. I didn't see a c-119 (flying box car)
The only plane I was glad to exit before it landed.
Taking off I wasn't sure it would make it 8-[

Thanks for fixing link, may have something todo with lack of comments.
