Question about Gift Giving :)

Post by Lorna »

Hey girls,

What would you do if you bought someone a gift and decided that it was so cute that you wanted to keep it for yourself? Do you give the gift anyway, and buy yourself the same exact one, or do you keep the original item for yourself and give her something else?

Tomorrow is my GG friend Jenny's birthday. I bought her a cute little black purse. But I think I just may want to keep it... I'll get her a nice dress instead! I know exactly what she'd like... I know her testes.

But then if I got her a dress then I'd want one too... and what if I liked that too? We can't both have the same outfit? What if God forbid we were to accidentally both wear the same dress on the same night? LOL!!! 8-[

I know I've been dressing publicly for 5 years but I'm still a little naive in terms of certain feminine rituals... like gift-giving! I'll admit I am no expert...

Lorna.

Yes, I understand the difficulty in shopping for someone else. I go out at christmas time shopping and come home with a car full of things for me and didn't find a things for anyone else  It's just that I'm very petite (4' 10" and weigh 90 lbs.and I wear a size "0") so when I do find something that fits me, I GRAB IT!!! Christmas time the stores are very stocked, so I find my size alot then. My one girl friend used to be the same size as me too.

What I do when I'm shopping for one of my friends is, I try to look for somethings that when I first see it, I say, "That outfit (or whatever)says ("friend's name") all over it" (even though we may have the same tastes) you can always find something that would be fitting for "just" them, maybe the color could be different then you would like or something. But whatever it is, I try to get my friends something that I know "they" would just like. It doesn't have to be clothing, it could be an interest they may have, maybe a special book or a music CD, or even just a bit of pampering like a basket filled with bubble bath and lotions in a scent that "she" likes.

I hope I helped you a little,
and have fun shopping!! :)

Good Luck,

Unless she's actually expecting the purse, what's the harm in keeping it for yourself? Get her a nice dress. And if you like the dress, feel free to get the same for yourself. It's no mortal sin for two women to have some of the same outfits, only something of a faux pas if they happen to wear them at the same time. For that matter, you could probably both have the same black purse, provided each of you had and used several--just use one of your alternates if you think you might run into her. Most women don't have the luxury of originals. :)

Thanks for the input gals... :)

I'll probably wind up giving her the purse. I'll go pick up one just like it today!

It's real cute... but the one I normally carry is much bigger... I keep all my junk in there. Wallet, keys, phone, makeup, etc.

This may be a little off-topic, but this happened to me around 28 years ago, getting a gift for my then girlfriend, but keeping it and buying her another, but not an exact match.

The item was a guitar. She then lived in the eastern side of NY state, but we visited evrey once in a while and she said she was interested in learning to play guitar. I wound up buying her a new Fender acoustic guitar. The original used guitar that I originally bought for her was so good I just had to keep it - my favorite acoustic guitar in my then 14 years of guitar playing (it was a Gibson from the 50's or early 60's). She really liked the Fender acoustic and I never told her exactly why I bought the first one, just that I tried it and liked it.

The happy ending - the next year we got married and made beautiful music with each other since (although the guitars have remained in their cases for the past several years).
