the big black box - Resolved
Tonight I went to the index page, and there's a 1x3" black box flickering over the "Welcome to the CDforum" slogan. It's also there on every thread I read. Really distracting! Anything I can do about it?

Hi Beauty--
It is a larger version of the flashing that lets you know that a new post has appeared in a topic. I have always seen some version of it on this forum, but it usually goes away after 15 seconds or so.
I can get it to go away now by closing down the forum, and re-opening it.
Darlene, early on Beauty and I tried to work with the various problems I had with this system. After awhile, we realized that whatever the troubles were, they couldn't easily be fixed. I go to two other phpBB forums, and don't run into these difficulties there. It's expensive to get a tech out to the house, but I hope to be able to do that again sometime soon.

Hi Beauty--
I did find the area that Donna indicated (thanks, Donna!), and on Windows ME it is reached by going to "My computer", then, "Control Panel." There I found "Internet options," and the rest was the same as Donna described it.
The problem has never again been as severe as it was the week I posted, and only appears on the home page sometimes. I'll see if it re-appears, but it's not a problem now.
The forum software has stabilized in regard to my computer. I can now log on automatically, do quotes, and I don't get logged off everytime I go to a new section. It's great! Makes it much easier to get around.
