No posts since last visit - Answered

Donna, if you look at the clocks on the left-hand side of the home page, you'll see the “you last visited” clock on top, and the “time is now” clock on the bottom.

When you get the the “No topics or posts met your search criteria” message, look at the clocks. Even if it’s been eight hours since your last visit, the top clock will have reset:

You last visited: May 31, 2008 12:28
Time is now: May 31, 2008 12:29

So the software thinks that a minute ago was your last visit, and of course there’s been no posts in that amount of time!

I go to another phpBB forum where this happens, too, and no one could figure it out until I noticed the clocks. We still don’t know why it happens, though.

I posted about it on here as an answer to someone else's problem with this, but a search of keywords "clock" and "reset" under my name didn't return any results.

Aha! I did find the other post. Since I'd sent SilverLady a pm, I never actually posted in the thread.

One fix on other forums is a getdaily search.

It finds all posts posted in the last 24 hours.

Not all forums have the options, however. CD.com, MHB.com and Roses do.

Anita -

Thank you for answering Donna's query! :)

I don't know if our software has, or will support, a "getdaily" feature as well as the "view posts since last visit" . . . but I'm sure Caith can find out. This 'getdaily' feature is one that I would find very useful.

Hi SilverLady--
Glad to help out.

The 'getdaily' feature would be best if it didn't depend on when you last visited. Many of us have experienced getting bumped off-line while checking posts, and they're all gone when we come back.

That happens occasionally to me, too, or I'll log in several times just to work on new registrations, then another time to read the posts, etc. That's where a "getdaily" feature would be a benefit . . . but I would want it to work independently of the "view posts since last visit" feature.

Ask, and ye shall receive. I've located the MOD to provide this, and will try to get it installed later this evening. ##3##

:please: Oh, Caith, my friend, would you please, pretty please, install a "getdaily" feature to the Forum, that would work independently of our current "view posts since last visit" search engine?

Love you, girlfriend!!

I'm working on it right now. It appears the mod isn't up-to-date for the latest version of the forum software. I'll find out what I need to fix, and get it online in just a few days at the worst.

UPDATE: :coffee: No sweat! Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

Way to go, Caith! You picked up the ball and ran with it. This will make the forum more user-friendly for many of us.

Well! Today the forum was putting me through ALL the tricks. I was unlogged--it didn't remember me. Once I logged in, the clocks were aligned perfectly, so I had no posts to view since last visit. And the back button kept telling me that the "page has expired," which is annoying. The only trial it didn't put me through was the "you cannot initiate another search so soon" foolishness.

But...I skipped right over to the new feature, and clicked on one day's worth of posts, and there they were! Whoo-hoo!

Me too, so I open each thread in a new window/tab. Read/replay, then close that window/tab to go to the next new post.

- Sorry, folks, but that "page expired" screen is part of the new software upgrades, and we have no control over it. You can either do as Donna does (above) or just hit the "back" button to return to the original screen. Yes, this new feature annoys me, too, but I have just learned to deal with it!

))ok((
