Problem in a year

Post by Miss Robyn »

Well having be Military is one problem but not my main problem.

Having to watch someone's items get moved out of there room last weekend, the person had a fire-safe but didn't have the key in the room. The movers wanted to see what was in it so they could see if they could ship it or not. Well it being locked and them not knowing what was inside they couldn't ship it.

Which leads to my problem. I keep my panties/bras in my safe. And thought there should be no problem when the time comes to move. Well if I have to open my safe to show the movers that could be a big problem, don't know I want to hide items in pockets of clothes and pockets of bags.

Not sure what I'm going to do, cause I really don't want to throw away any of my clothes cause thats like throwing away money.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure who I would send it to though. I don't have anyone back home that knows I CD. Hmm unless within the next 1 1/2 yrs I come out to someone back home, which right now I don't see happening.

Did they just up and move the guy out without warning?

Seems to me you'd have ample time, after receiving transfer orders, to pack your things layered inside other clothes.

Robyn, look into mailing your things to a postal station close to where you'd land back home. I think most post offices will hold a package for pick up, just not sure what type of service it is called.

i have heard of people mailing supplies to themselves when they hike the Appalachian Trail. You know they mail food and clean clothing to several points along the trail beforehand and stop in and pick them up weeks later.

Mailing package to yourself

Post by Jean Marie »

I have now worked for US Postal sevice for 32 years. Yes you can mail an item to your self in one of three ways, however the longest possible post office would hold your parcel would be 30 daysand that would be by special request, normal time to hold a parcel is 15 days. one way to mail to your self is to send to Your Name, % of General Delivery, city, state, zip would be held 15 days for you to pick up with common ID credintials, 2nd method is to rent a post office box any mail that would fit into the box would stay there as long as box rent is paid. any parcel addressed to that to that box that is too large to fit in box woiuld be held 15 days. 3rd way is to mail to your street address of record. IF someone at that address accepted delivery, parcel would be in that persons possession, if no one at home at that address then parcel would be held 15 days. I think your best bet to send your things back to the states where there will be a long period for your return would be to send it to someone that would keep it for you without opening it. Hope this helps Jean Marie [David]

Get a pair of jeans or two. Get items flat and place into legs of jeans and fold the jeans up and place them into a box of clothes. Use a bit of tape if you feel the box may be rifled through heavily. Then when the packers come, you have an open box of clothes for them to seal up.

Works well for suitcases also if you think TSA or others will look through.

With more and more air lines charging for even the first checked bag and even talk of charging for large, heavy carry on bags, Why not just mail boxes of civilian clothes to where ever you will be taking leave before you report to your next permanent party duty station, ie your parents home. Just explain that with having to carry your basic issue military clothing through a series of airports and or bus terminals it is easier to send some extra civies home through the mail where they will be there for you while on leave of absence, and you wont have to deal with all the hassles of worrying about U S Customs agents wanting to go through everything to ensure you didn't stock up on designer clothing to resale stateside without paying duties and customs. Pack them well and put personal clothing on the Customs declaration tag, and also pack some of your drab clothes and hide them between the layers. If you are PCS'ing in the warmer months, there is really no need for you to carry your winter coats and sweaters. I worked in the mail room while I was stationed in Germany, and it was common for guys and gals to mail home some of their clothing that way when they were getting ready to return to CONUS for PCS or ETS. Or if all else fails maybe you can let the forum know where you are returning to and maybe one of the members here can act as a receiver of said package(s) to hold for you until you land and you can work out the details of such by e-mail or PM :-k
