Something New

Post by Jaye »

I did something different Friday. I work in a hotel, and management scheduled a monthly potluck lunch for the employees. I had planned a femme shopping trip for Friday afternoon, and decided I was going to attend the lunch that way. My employers and most all of my coworkers know about me. I came out to my supervisor (Sherry) about three weeks into my employment, and the manager (first Angel, now Lynn) shortly after. I've stopped into the hotel to pick up my paychecks en femme before, so I wasn't really worried about how people would react.

For some reason or other, whenever I go into work when I'm not working, I somehow end up doing something work-related. I answer the phone, or I end up covering the desk while someone goes to the bathroom, or something like that. With an eye toward that possibility, I ditched my usual jeans/tank top shopping attire for a nice print blouse and a pair of black slacks. I also picked up a new hairpiece (strawberry blonde) last month, and this was my first outing with it.

I got to the hotel just in time for lunch. Everyone was happy to see me. A couple of the newer housekeepers hadn't seen me dressed up before, but they weren't too disturbed. I was a little more concerned when two of our upper management people showed up, but they hardly batted an eye. The Vice President of our company told me I could dress however I wished as long as I continue to do the good work that I'm known for. 8-[

Everyone there has a camera or a camera-phone, and they all wanted my picture, or to pose with them. I felt a little like a model, doing all that posing (it's harder than it looks).

Anyway, after lunch I followed Sherry back into the office to chat. Our company is getting audited, so there was a little bit of a mad rush to locate some paperwork. I happened to know where some of it is stored, so the two of us went up to the third floor to find it.

After we came back down, the girl who was supposed to work the evening shift called, saying that something had come up, and she was going to be an hour or so late. Sherry turned to me and asked if I wanted some overtime. I asked her if she wanted me to go home and change. She asked how long that would take. I told her that with traffic and all, it would probably take me close to an hour. She told me not to worry, and asked me to clock in.

So that's how I ended up working en femme. Friday was unusually slow for us, but I took a few reservations, and checked some folks in. No one said "Boo!" or anything else about how I was dressed. About twenty minutes in, Lynn brought me a nametag marked "jaye" (for some reason, all our tags are printed in lower case). I thanked her, and told her I might need it more in the future.

A little after four, "my" relief showed up. I hung out a few minutes longer, then drove over to the mall. I hadn't been to bed since the night before, so I didn't shop long. I picked up a discounted Kathy van Zeeland purse at Dillard's. It was one like this, except in black:

Somehow I forgot to mention how much fun everything was. It was such a relief being accepted by everyone at work, and all the salespeople at the mall were very nice to me. I was even "Ma'amed" a couple of times. All in all, it was a very nice afternoon out.

Hi all,

So, if I'm understanding you rightly, Jaye, you'll be going to work en femme from now on? Oh, come on, Jaye! Of course you will! Seriously, though, that's a neat little episode and any CD could only wish that such a thing could come to pass in his own life. I know I could.

Congrats to you, Jaye, for being open about who you are with your colleagues and friends, and an extra special congratulations to your colleagues for recognizing your worth, as both an employee and as a person, regardless of how you choose to present yourself.

May other businesses watch and learn.

Love,
CJ

After basking in the glow of a fantasy come true, I have fallen under the harsh glare of reality.

There has been a bit of a shake-up at work since that day. The GM was fired literally minutes after the conversation we had Friday afternoon. The AGM/Front Office Manager has been promoted to fill the position. Our organization is small, and she wants to split her former duties between myself and one other employee, no working as a sales coordinator. Upper management has approved this, but they have made the stipulation that I dress as a male. Actually, what was said is that they want me to dress according to my legal identification. So, if I go forward with my plan to transition, they won't (presumably) interfere. I will try to keep everyone aware of things as they occur.

Well Hon, if nothing else, your value as a good employee has shown through and you have what a lot of people in the work force aspire to and that is some form of job security. It seems that you have developed that. All I would say is don't rock the boat right now and I would quitely confirm the company's position to the possibility of your transistioning!

We are glad for you and do keep us posted as this develops!

Love ya,

Hi Jaye,

What an uplifting story. I love hearing the "I can" type of stories. Those are the ones that motivated me to realize I could be whoever I wanted to be. Not everyone is accepting, but we never know who is if we never tell anyone. At least you know where you stand. Good luck to you.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Way to go, Jaye. All of that didn't happen overnight, and you have a lot of goodwill that you've generated. You've also built up people's tolerance for another 'you" showing up at special occasions. (or even for work, in this case.)
