Best place to live
I currrently live in a very conserative area in Wa...if i were to move where should i start to look at that is CD friendly?

I have found Dallas, TX to be CD friendly. Trans people have discrimination protection in housing, accomidations, workplace, and etc. I have gone out en fem and so far have not had any problem doing what I want or going where I want. I have used public restrooms and women's dressing rooms with no problem. We have various support groups like Tri-Ess and MCDC.

I am sure Anita may offer some sage advice, but San Fransisco would be a good option. Atlanta has a very active "alternative lifestyle" community as well. Then there is Chicago too! Denver and Boulder, Co. Just about any city in Colorado for that matter!
Some places I would steer clear of is Lynchburg, Virginia and Bob Jones University and Annapolis, Maryland.

It's amazing that Dallas has changed so much since I lived there in 1990. I would never have thought of the area as open-minded about any alternative lifestyle while I was living there ... but times change. Washington has very similar legal protections to what JoAnn writes about and there are certainly no shortage of support organizations - so long as you're close to a large population center. That seems to be the key in much of the country. Like many states the dense population areas in Washington are very liberal, and the more rural areas are much more conservative. The Seattle area certainly has a lot to offer and I'd be happy to provide more information on what I've researched and experienced. Mandy? Feel free to reply or PM if you'd like to know more.

Canada is GREAT if you go in the eastern areas such as Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto.
Moncton and Montreal do have a significantly french-speaking (~50%) population.
However, l've never seen any discrimination in Moncton even if it has a higher-than-usual crossdresser traffic.
If you don't mind the cold, I'd say give Canada a try. I've also heard Boston is pretty good, though l've never seen a crossdresser there during my three trips.

I know San Francisco has been mentioned. However the entire bay area is LBGT friendly. Some little towns a little less so. I live in a small bay area town that is kind of accepting. I wear skirts and other fem items out and about with out trying to pass.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons. As you are crunchy and good with chocolate!

Vancouver, BC also supports a lot of diversity, is much closer to Washington, and is not particularly cold through the winter. It's also quite lovely. as a cross-dresser i don't think you can beat western Washington, especially around Seattle.....it's perfect in so many ways.
for example, you can be completely shaved at least 8 months of the year and mostly shaved the rest of the time. the summer light is absolutely perfect for photography, you can dress up for the city or dress down for the city....either works anytime, and the climate is idea for skin care too. and the city is wonderful for being out and about by foot or public transit.
oh, and the people.....either don't care or care enough to be very nice. i don't know many places we can find approval, but here we can be accepted.

CD friendly places
Hello: I'd agree that in general large cities would be best-- possibly also college towns, if you don't like cities.
I'm in the Washington, D.C. area, and would say the most "tolerant" parts are downtown D.C./"Dupont Circle" area (large gay community in the Dupont circle area), Takoma Park, Maryland (has a history of alternative/"counter culture" activity), "old town" Alexandria, Virginia, north Arlington, Virginia.
The "Adams Morgan" area of D.C. is very diverse, but side streets after dark can be risky no matter how you're dressed-- not very well lit.
And of course, as with any large city, there are parts I would never venture into at all, no matter how I was dressed or what time of day.
I have not tried going to suburban shopping malls "dressed."
I live just south of core downtown Silver Spring, and the downtown Silver Spring area can be... challenging for a CDer. Lots of teenagers and construction sites. I have gone into BORDERS, WHOLE FOODS, and GIANT cross dressed, and not had any trouble. But there will be more teens in the CITY PLACE mall-- have to be very careful there-- the BURLINGTON COAT FACTORY store is good though-- but use cash when paying if you are "dressed." (and don't bother with the changing rooms-- too risky).
