Thanks, Julie! Certainly surnames don't come up as much, but when they do, one that goes well with your chosen first name is a nice touch. Choosing a surname is something more of a challenge: since people choose first names all the time, there are abundant resources for doing so; this isn't exactly the case for last names. :| I scanned phone books and census lists for a fair amount of time before I found candidates that felt like comfortable matches for Celia. But I think it was worth it.

My first name comes from an ex sister in law whom I admired, my middle name comes from a women who I knew as youngster that I thought was very pretty, and my last name was chosen from the phone book.

What I found appealing in assuming a full fem identity... that it is for me... a further acknowledgement and expression of my acceptance of the feminine side of me.

For some reason I have always liked the last name Taylor so that's what I chose. Lorna Taylor!

A lot of girls pick names that have some personal significance--the names of old girlfriends, aunts, the maiden names of their mothers, etc. My approach was pretty much form over substance: I picked a first name that I found pleasing to the ear and basically chose a last name that I thought sounded good with it. I guess the taunting I received over my given name led me to seek something that I thought people would find pleasing, although occasionally people do have fun with Celia.

[Genifer Teal]

Choosing Genifer was easy because it is a derrivative (did I spell that right?) of my male name. It was much later on that I learned how common it is, but that is another post.

After a few years, I decided it was time for a "last" name(I don't like the sound of "sir"name). My first thought was to choose and action name or something suggestive - with out making me sound like a porn star. I even considered how convenient it would be if I kept my same initials as my given name.

I settled on Teal for several reasons. I like the color, which could be considered femenine. If you call me Gen for short, my name would become Gen Teal which sounds like gentle. That last part sold me. I can now be introduced as Miss Gen Teal.

That is how Genifer Teal came to be.
