RIP Virginia Prince

It's finally that day: the trans community has lost another of our pioneers.

She died yesterday after a 30-day decline in health that a month ago was nowhere to be seen.

A pioneer whose daring and grit made a lot of difference to me personally—just one of the tens of thousands whose lives she touched.

When she began there were no landmarks. A crossdresser was isolated, ignorant and left to wonder if s/he was crazy or some kind of criminal.

Virginia changed all that. She let us know we weren't alone, and she helped map the territory for us.

A real heroine. She'll be remembered widely and she deserves all our gratitude and a round of farewell cheers.

I really never learned that much about her, for whatever reason. I owe her some gratitude, nonetheless, and acknowledge that she was out there doing what she could for the cause.

I remember her appearance (fully dressed of course) on the David Jacobs chat show. She was the first real crossdresser I had ever seen (not a drag queen or actor). She was completely honest and open about who and what she was, and she looked great and carried herself wonderfully. I was a teenager at the time and she made a tremendous impact on me. She was a true pioneer for all women like us.
