I did it-- Got my ears pierced

Post by Grace »

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in awhile, but I had to share a great experience. I just spent 6 weeks touring Latin America, and on the second week of the trip, thought, what the heck! I've been wanting my ears pierced since I was 19 (42 years ago!), but like many, was fearful of the reaction of others. I finally decided I didn't care, and went for it.

I checked out half a dozen jewelry stores (joyerias) in Granada, Nicaragua, found a pair of gold piercing studs, and went to a beauty parlor. The funny thing was that I saw a word on their marquis that started with P that I thought might mean "piercing" in Spanish, so I asked if they did that, and they said yes. I looked up the word later, and found it meant "hairdresser." :-) All's well that ends well, though.

The piercing was done with a very long needle, and it didn't hurt at all-- I've worn many clip-ons that hurt, and I was expecting the worst, but I could barely feel it.

It has been 6 weeks now, and I'm able to wear all kinds of earrings that I used to just look at longingly. Of course, by now I've spent a couple hundred dollars on earrings already-- what a joy! Let's see, a new dress, or another pair of earrings? Oh that pair will remind me of Peru-- I definitely need that! Hard choices. :-)

To my pleasant surprise, most people I know haven't commented on it, and all are accepting. If anyone is on the fence like I was, I say Go for it!

Cheers.

Hi Grace,

How nice for you. I remember when I finally broke down and got both of mine pierced. It was a great feeling. All the best to you.

Love always,

Lucky for me, my rebellious teenage years served me well, in that they gave me a few extra holes in my ears.

And yeah, I'm probably as much an earring junkie as I am about shoes.

Hi Grace

Congratulations on your ear piercings!

Had mine pierced about 5 years ago and like you was a
little self conscious of what people might think..turned out to be a non issue..The only comment I received was from a girlfriend of ours who gave me suggestions on how to care for them those first six weeks while they were healing.

Congratulations...

I got mine pierced about 2 ago (together with my kids). I also was curious what other people might think or tell me about it - but not even one person made a comment on it, some might not even have noticed it - others simply do not take care.

What I still remember: it was hard to wait until the piercing was healed so I could wear nice ear-rings for the first time...

Mine have been pierced since the late 70's. No one really cares or notices. I don't wear earings anymore though.

Grace, I fully understand your excitement about your piercings. Had mine done about 1 1/2 years ago and love it!!!! The only negative comment I got at work was from a redneck who asked if I was gay. Told him no, "but had too much beer, crazy girlfriend and ya wanna see my tatoo?" (as I turned around). End of that...the girls at work love them...I always wear some kinda studs. So enjoy and take care of them til they heal

Congratulations, Grace. That's definitely an exciting step and I absolutely understand your excitement. Feel free to gush endlessly about it. There's something immensely appealing about having the freedom to wear any kind of earring and not feel like your "faking it" with clip-ons (even though, yes, I know there are women who wear clip-ons too.)

Isn't that entertaining? I completely agree that the discomfort of an evening with something squeezing your earlobe is much, much more painful than the piercing process. Taking care of the initial studs wasn't too bad, either, and I'm glad I ignored all the advice I've read about being able to take them out after a brief vacation to go to work. Letting them heal properly is definitely the best idea and realizing that "outing yourself" in this manner isn't really a big deal can turn into a great lesson in self-acceptance. It certainly was for me.

I know what you mean. It's almost impossible to resist picking up earrings on vacation (or just about anywhere else a lovely pair catches your eye, for that matter.)

Congratulations girlfriend. I know you feel just out of this world. I have two piercings in each ear. Long story for some other time.

Gongrats dear

I got my left pierced twice back in the early 90's. I got my right pierced "once" last May. Almost a year now.

I work in a very professional environment and I wear earrings in both ears 24/7 and no-one cares. I am a professional and I provide professional work. They focus on that.

Both ears are pierced, two holes in each ear. Also both nipples pierced. I've had these piercings for over 20 years.
