Hi all,
I agree, Merinda. Terminally ill children ought not to be the subject of satire. Having said this, seeing as it's the obvious aim of controversial shows such as Chaser's (or South Park, for that matter) to poke and prod and sometimes euthanize sacred cows (allegedly in the name of generating healthy debate), I can't say I'm surprised by this skit. However, the show's producers' lack of sensitivity is pretty appalling.
Undoubtedly, this "laughing matter" would prove horrible to anyone on Chaser's creative staff if he or she had--or knew someone who had--a terminally ill child.
Although ABC did the right thing by pulling the skit from television reruns, the video is now out there on the internet. And it WILL be seen. And that says as much, if not more, about viewers' tastes (or lack thereof) than it does about those of the show's producers.

That's disgusting. I am very sorry but that sort of 'entertainment' fills me with loathing. Just like the Sun newspaper during the 1989 Hillborough tragedy when 96 people died. To this day the people of Liverpool do not buy it and it is estimated they have lost nearly $2billion dollars in the boycott.
Perhaps something similar is in order here.

So what does ABC do about it? They draw as much attention to it as possible by publicly denouncing it, calling it 'tasteless', 'abominable' and so on and so forth, fully knowing that all this attention is going to do one thing, get people talking about it, and watch the show to see what it's all about.

Yeah, but the problem with the 'off with their heads'! response that usually comes when some media outlet, whether it be TV, radio, video games or whatever else drops some kind of bomb, is that it's a hop, skip and a jump from "this is unacceptable" to "this should be banned!" to "this is illegal!" censorship.Merinda wrote:The Chaser show should be axed , along with whoever at the ABC that allowed this skit to go to air.
There is NOTHING funny about kids with a terminal illness .
I like many others will never watch this show again.
Granted, that's a worst case scenario, but I think this'll work itself out, in that no advertiser will touch them with a ten foot pole, after the tv viewing public at large makes their opinions known about it.

Merinda,
I have seriously disliked this show and its attempt at humour since its inception.
The whole show is full of cheap shots. Nothing original or humorous. It only knocks things done by others and brings nothing new to the table.
My youngest daughter has liked this show for a couple of seasons and I have tried to point out the cheapness and distasteful rubbish humour and only now has she seen the fact that all I have said is pretty right.
They are scum.
Good on you Merinda.
