Hi Merinda. Yes we can buy and set off our own fireworks, but there may be city ordinances against it within city limits. Some places have locations where people can go to set the fireworks off.

I don't get much of a "Bang" out of the fireworks displays since Vietnam. Truly there is nothing like being thrown out of your bunk by the back concussion of an 8 inch gun going off right over your head making the entire 673 ft. ship shake, though separated by a deck from direct effects. I also developed an aversion to loud noises of the explosive kind.

Sorry to hear that Carolynn

As a child , my greatest fear was being conscripted and sent to Vietnam , fortunately by the age of 12/13 , Prime Minister Whitlam withdrew all Australian troops.

Until the mid 70's we had two days a year that we let off fireworks , one was the second Monday night in June celebrating the Queens birthday , the other was on November 5 ( I think ?) which was Guy Faulkes night.
Both nights were commonly refered to as "crackernight".

Now in 2009 , anyone caught with fireworks faces a $10,000 fine or two years jail , everything gets banned nowdays .

Given the recent tinderbox conditions, that almost makes sense. Here, we have fireworks on New Year's eve as well, espcially public displays. There are groups who want to ban fireworks every year. Mostly it is people who claim to want to protect people from themselves, as there are some accidental burns to kids and others and building fires every year, since not all folks pass Darwin's test for fitness to reproduce and behave foolishly!! :P Bet you didn't know that was one basis for the Darwin Awards, didja? :) People who play with eletricity and new and novel ways of lighting charcoal grills are others tests often failed. #-o

Are there public displays of fireworks on those days in OZ? I seem to recall pictures of new years celebration fireworks last new years?

Hi Carolynn ,

Public displays are permitted for events , "hypocritically" they even allow public displays on total fire ban days :?

I just think the penalty is over the top , I'd get less jailtime for punching an old lady.

Hi Merinda. Looks like I have my light and fury after all, as a heavy thunderstorm with ground to cloud lightning and plenty of thunder cracks has moved it, and may be around for the next hour or so, maybe more as it keeps redeveloping. Puts an end to the outdoor activities too. Too dangerous. We were at 98 degrees F. when it arrived, now 20 minutes later, we are at 88 degrees. Heavy winds with the next little cell. Could be interesting on the area's lakes.
Well we live in Oklahoma. Our state's favorite son was Will Rogers, a half Cherokee Indian, who is famous for saying, "If you are in Oklahoma and don't like the weather, just wait an hour. It'll change." :)

I've heard that famous saying

Here in Melbourne , in the Springtime , we're known as having 4 seasons in one day.
On some Spring days you can walk out the front door in brilliant sunshine , by the time you walk about a block , the clouds have blown in with pouring rain.
Its more like 4 seasons in 5 minutes.

Golly gosh Merinda
Fireworks are legal here in Florida (state motto "laws? who needs stinkin' laws"). Walmart sells the type that don't go up in the air but can really do a number on your hair. Now, for serious stuff, ya gotta go to a fireworks store and sign a statement at the register that they're only gonna be used for "agricultural purposes". Had lots of agriculture stuff going on here last night. Oh well, had a few hotdogs, enjoyed the city display...and the better ones by the locals. We have the same kinda weather...sunny then very stormy in our rainy season....but do have our drought times also. I learned never ever go out without my umbrella, wet hair is ewwwwww.
