A man's ankles tend to be larger and can support more weight. What I have found that in my sport, after a workout, putting on a pair of heels 3" or so make my legs feel so much better. I also read somewhere a few months ago that a new type of exercise was catching on where else, but California and it was an aerobics class for men and they wore high heels.
As for sizes, I personally buy heels that fit. My grandaddy use to say, "well I wear a 9 but a 10 feels so good, I buy an 11."

It took me awhile to find my size, at least what I am comfortable in.
I have a couple pair I should donate somewhere since I will never wear because they hurt my feet.
I have really nice looking pair of boots with 3" heals that really hurt to wear but I do it anyways every so often becuase I just love the look.

First of all, this include two topics: a) wearing shoes that do not fit in size and b) wearing shoes with high heels.
In general I think everyone should wear the shoes, she is comfortable with, but the report states, that this is not true for many (wo)men.
My opinion about a) is: I will never buy those, even the selection in size 9 or more is narrow. But it makes no sense to buy shoes, that do not fit. They start to hurt within minutes. I tried... lol... and i never wear them anymore. Unfortunately - even I spent a long time for trying them - the latest pairs did hurt as well after quite a time of walking, but I hope this will go away by time.
b) is something different and reveals an even more complex question: why the hell do women wear high heeled shoes at all? The are not comfortable, they will hurt sooner or later, they put damage to the feet and they take away to possibility to run, in case this would be wise.
I made my thoughts about this and the main one is, that women wear heeled shoes, because men like them. The feet look smaller (like girls ones), the body looks taller, it is obvious to men, that she can not run away and the overall look is more sexy - they simply draw attention. With those shoes and other items, women know by experience, that they look more attractive to men and they send signals like "get me" by doing so. Sad but true, many women define their "market value" by having the most attractive look as possible.
Why do we Transgender and Crossdresser wear these shoes, too? Some might think, without these we do not look or feel femme enough. But some I guess simply do so, because they try to imitate the style, women should look like in their mind - not the way, women in all day life really look like. This does not only apply to shoes...
Well, I stopped wearing those shoes. They make me feel pain instead of feel more femme. Beside this, I am tall enough. The latest shoes I bought had heels below 2 inch or no heels at all. Sure - they do not draw attention and possibly I look less attractive to men - well I do not take care, as I am not interested in men. Beside this, even GGs should reconsider this.
I simply stopped to imitate those sexy, attractive women you can see here and there. I will never look that sexy and I do not want to be seen as a sexy item. I started to watch the women I see at the station, when going to the office and in other all-day situations. This is what women look like, casual and comfortable outfit. Sometimes more unisex (which is a bit hard for my passing, as I look more androgyne than femme), sometimes truly femme, but still comfortable - no high heels, no mini-skirt...
And this had a side effect: those sexy dressed women do not attract me anymore... lol...

I personaly love wearing heels. I dress only for myself so why should I care?
I just love the way I feel when I walk in them, I feel so femm
I am not tall, just under 5' 6" so perhaps that is a factor too.
I prefer 2-2 1/2" heels though I have up to 4" heels. I can walk hours in a 2" heel without discomfort but 3" and higher do get uncomfortable in just an hour or two.

Oddly, I find that when my knee arthritis is bothering me that it feels better not to walk flat footed. I keep my heel up off the ground, as if I was wearing heels, although I don't so it's more like I was tiptoeing. Maybe this is what make Virginias heels feel so good, some sort of biomechanical thing.
As to why heels when they are usually so non functional? They're lingerie for the feet, and have become socially acceptable to be displayed. Although wear the wrong heels to the wrong event and their will be great disapproval. Why do you think the pictures in girlie magazines always feature huge heels?

I have an IS friend I will call "T" who has lived as a woman since her later teens when she was a catalog model with a slightly androgenous look. She is also a make up artist who worked in Hollywood and theater until a car wreck that has been difficult for her to recover from, and currently works in makeover/sales in a major department store. Her perspective on what it takes to make her look good is distinctively from that model/makeup/plastic world, something we discuss often. Basically I am from the natural is better (hippy?) perspective, while she is from the plastic glitz is better. She recently was diagnosed with type II diabetes and is experiencing some neoropathy when she wears her heels. Her endocrinologist cautioned her against wearing high heels for most of her day as she had been doing, as they can cause vascular deterioration in diabetic feet and increase neuropathy. She did noit tell her not to wear them at all, just use them in moderation.
"T" likes 4" heels or higher because she thinks they make her legs look sexy. She iis 5'6" and wore a size 6 when she was 30 years younger, and insists on squeezing her feet into the same size shoe, despite the discomfort to a foot that is, um, "more mature" and shows some deformation from wearing the higher heels for so long. She admits that the next size up is more comfortable, but.... well, I guess it is a self image problem. She says this year is the last year for that heel height, so she has worn ever higher heels as a last "Hoorah". Then she goes home and soaks her feet!!
