Ladies, since this forum is not really a democracy, more of a republic and since I sit right next to one of the "powers that be" I still must pose this question and I hope you will express your opinion on.

I propose that members give their location under their avatar! Now they don't have to give street address or perhaps even town, but at least the state and/or country of current residence. One reason is that we all have different and varying opinions on topics and knowing where someone currently resides would help explain (in some situations) from whence they are coming, so to speak. It is not like I am asking for their political persuasion, but someone from "across the pond" may make a statement and those of us here and not knowing where she is from just scratch our heads and think " what the $%&# is she talking about?"

I also know that they could have currently moved to that location from somewhere else (even in the world) and took that contrary influence with them, but its a start. I also realize that some of our sisters may use, uh how can I say this politely "misdirection?" but that can come back to bite them as well.

Please express your opinion and let Sharon and SL and the other Mods know how we feel about it.

While I think it's nice to see where other girls are from and I respect anyones right to privacy I don't see any harm in naming your country. I get a good sense of community knowing there are women just like me all over the place!

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask forum participants to narrow it down to geography that contains a million people or thereabouts. For some that means a city, for others a state or a country. That's still a needle in a haystack so it's not like you're giving yourself away, but it does mean we'll be able to have much more meaningful conversations with one another.

I know I really appreciate knowing what timezone someone is in when they're in the chat room. Or what kind of weather they're experiencing. Or what the political climate is like with respect to LGBT issues in their neck of the woods. It has nothing to do with identifying them but everything to do with getting to know them better.

I think I've always been from "eastern Kansas" on this forum. It seems plenty safe enough to me.

I'm sure we get the occasional bigot who poses here looking for trouble, which is why I plan to leave my location as somewhere within the 27,000 some-odd square miles that comprise the eastern third of the 15th largest state in our country.

Anyone on our forum who really wanted to know my location more specifically could read all my 300+ posts, and very likely put all the clues together. In fact, they could probably even find me in the telephone book. I'm not "afraid" of any SO or CD here who would go to so much trouble to read enough of my posts to figure me out. Besides, there are much easier ways.

Hugs,

Bernice

I put my vague location on my thing, but I think this should be voluntary simply because I think minor rules like this should be kept to a minimum

I was happy to show the city and country that I live in, like Melbourne is a reasonably large city with a population of about 4 million + :) :)

County and Country is fine by me, I wouldn't like to add my town as it is small-ish (about 20k) in deference to senior management's sensitivity.

I have always kept mine vague mostly due to not wanting to give to much away.

I just joined this forum, and so far LOVE IT VERY MUCH!!!!!

Even tho I am new, I think that letting everyone know (roughly) would be
a good idea. When I joined, I put in my profile that I'm from Michigan.
I love to read all of the comments in this forum and am always looking
to see where the lady who is posting is from.
Anyway, love the idea.

Hi girls,

I know when I first came here I was so scared I would erase my cookies as well as history and search history to make certain no one knew I was here. I was way beyond paranoid. And it was a long time before I actually joined.

I think the relatively few people who feel it necessary to keep their location private, harms no one. It does however in some cases make the difference between someone registering or not. Otherwise we would not see members that choose not to say where they are from.

No one should be forced to give out information about themselves in exchange for support. "Baby Steps". When a person feels comfortable telling us where they are from, they will tell us. No one should be compelled as a condition of membership.

That is my opinion.

Love always,
Elizabeth

OMG! Not the Panty Police!!! :P
I don't think it shouldn't be a problem if folks are careful in what they post and what is in their profile so as not to give out information that can come back and bite them.
I was cautious even posting my photos and then thought if they are a member I'd like to meet them if not then as I am retired and broke what can some one do to threaten me if they recognize me. Not much!
