Too fast on the searches? - Answered

Post by Anita »

As soon as I come to the site and click on "Posts since last visit," I get this message:
You cannot make another search so soon after your last; please try again in a short while.
It usually takes at least three more tries to get around it. Sometimes I need to go to "last day," then "last week," and it will finally open on "last two weeks." After that, it's usually fine.

I don't expect there's any fix for this. I go to another phpBB forum using the same browser (Safari), and same OS (XP), and I've never had the problem. I decided I'd put this out here--maybe others have been experiencing it, too.

The message doesn't make a whole lot of sense, either--why would a search be "too fast, too soon" in the first place?

The only time I can't always get around it is if I go to a member's profile, and click on "See all posts by Anita," for instance. I'll get this message, and sometimes it won't go away.

Hi, Anita -

I've never seen the message pop up after I've logged in and then clicked on "Posts since last visit" . . . are you sure that you've properly logged out, and then are completely logging back into the Forum when this occurs?

I've had this message appear many times, usually when I am in the process of deleting members and am also searching for all of their posts in order that they can be deleted, as well. It's all part of the 'time out' clock built into our software, and there is nothing we can do about it.

I get that response occasionally. If I'm paying attention it seems to occur because I did an accidental double click.

I would like to see the time for "time between searches" feature reduced.

Thanks for the replies. I don't log out to the site: I check "remember me," and am automatically logged in when I show up. As far as double-clicking; yes, that type of feature is supposed to keep us from double-posting a reply.

But I have always double-clicked on "posts since last visit," and never had any trouble before. I'll try just clicking once, and that may solve the problem.

The software settings are at 15 second intervals for both posts being made and searches, and that is to help not overload our server . . . should we make it longer than that?!?

Clicking only once seems to have solved the problem; thanks! I did think that it was somehow related to the double-post mechanism, that tells you you can't post so soon after your first post. Little did I know what was really going on.

Oh, let's make it 30 seconds, or 45 seconds. Kids nowadays just expect everything to be fast, fast, fast, and it's a durn shame. Why, I had to use telephones where you had to let "0" spin ALLLLLLL the way back after you dialed it on the rotary wheel! It built character for me to do that!
[End of old-timer rant]
Time to lock this one up?

I had to wait on the operator to give her the number.

And up here, we have to cut more wood for the fire and add spruce bows to make more smoke.

My, this thread has "legs!"

On my grandfolks' party line in a little farming community, everyone had a different ring, and you heard ALL the rings on your hand-cranked wall phone. Grandma's was like, two short rings, and that's the only one you answered.

I can hear that padlock snapping...LOCKED THREAD.

Thank you all for the laughs, I *really* needed them today! =D>

Oh, and your comments alone would not be the 'lock' on this thread, it's just an automatic thing I do in this section . . . but I'm not in any hurry to do so, I'm wondering just how deep it's going to get around here!! :P

BTW, so very nice to see your beautiful face again, dearest CJ . . . I've been thinking about you lately . . . and get that darn cigarette out of your mouth, missy!! [-X

OOH,OOH,OOh! Don't lock it yet! This just brought back a memory.

I remember the exact moment, when as a tiny child, I learned how to whistle. What I remember clearly was that it happened while I was standing in the downstairs hallway, watching the man from the telephone company install our first ever, brand new rotary phone. I remember I had been trying and trying, and suddenly it just happened. Then I remember standing on the bottom step of the stairway, right next to where the man was installing the phone and telling him earnestly,"I can whistle!" and then whistling for him.
I'm sure he was just thrilled to death....
